I'm using a Vonage-branded Linksys WRTP54G for my home network, and my phone service through Vonage. It's done very well for me over the years, and meets my needs - with one exception:
802.11 security is limited to WPA - tkip, which has recently proven to be non-secure, and should be replaced with WPA2 (AES) but that isn't supported by this device. This means upgrading the firmware. So two questions:
1) Anyone know if Vonage will ever upgrade this device's firmware to support WPA2? Currently I am using "1.00.62" which actually seems more recent than what is available on the Linksys support site.
2) If I use non-Vonage firmware, is there any possibility of using the device for my Vonage service?
Or maybe the one question I should really ask - would I get other phone-service benefits from updating the hardware to something more recent?
Any thoughts, comments, or recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

Vonage and ONLY Vonage provides firmware updates for your device. Linksys does NOT provide firmware updates for your Vonage enabled device. The WRTP54G is one of Vonages older devices and if they haven't provided a firmware update by now for WPA2 security, more than likely they are not going to.
If you like your current device, I would suggest getting another router and let it be your primary router and use the WRTP54G solely as a phone adaper. I currently use a Linksys WRT54GL with after-market firmware (Tomato firmaware) as my primary router and my Vonage V-Portal acting solely as a phone adapter. Although the V-Portal is a router/phone adapter, it does not provide a wireless signal, only wired if you choose to use it as a router. |

Thanks for confirmation - I figured as much. Mainly wanted to know if I was missing something obvious.
In fact, I may do exactly what you describe. But I dislike having multiple boxes on the desk, and another power brick to plug in.
Still, it may be worthwhile for the additional features. I already have an older (RT31P2) adapter/router that would work for phone access. |
