I used to be a Vonage customer. I ported my number to AT&T because we have a new security system that requires a POTS line.

After having our number over on AT&T for a time, we started getting phone calls from all over the country at all times of the day and night. Each call was a variation on the same theme, "This number called my house..." The caller would then proceed to rattle off my phone number verbatim even though we had never called.

What I've been able to piece together is that Vonage assigned our number to a new customer on the Vonage network. Vonage "disconnected" our number instead of porting the number in their database. (I had AT&T do the port)

So, when this Vonage customer cals out, people see our number and he's none the wiser. When non-Vonage lines call the number back - they don't get the Vonage customer. They get us.

Vonage customer service has been absolutely no help. One girl there explained to me that it's perfectly acceptable for two separate households to have the same telephone number; since one is on AT&T (us) and another is on Vonage. Go figure.

Any ideas? I've resolved myself to either changing our phone number - a major hassle - or suing Vonage.

Vonage is not a LEC. When a number ports out from Vonage, it does not port out from Vonage at all. You request a number to be ported to AT&T. AT&T has to perform an NPAC lookup on the number to see who the current provider is so that they can submit the LOA and purchase order to. This would not be Vonage. It would be whichever Vonage partner carrier has your number. When the port is complete, if Vonage's carrier does not notify Vonage a number was ported out that was assigned to them, it remains in Vonage's inventory to be recycled.

This can be fixed. And would obviously need to be since the person who has your number cannot receive calls from non Vonage callers. Calers not using Vonage will reach you while Vonage callers will reach them. Obviously this person should be reporting they cannot receive calls. The number would have to be changed and then removed from Vonage inventory.

Please PM me your number.
