We have one vonage adapter. and two computers. one upstairs and the other downstairs. I work from home. the linksys adapter is plugged into the upstairs cable connection. the requirement is the person using the pc downstairs need to record some phone calls in the computer. how will that be possible. there is cable in the room but is it possible to use a second voip adapter and connect that to the pc and record calls. We don't want to go for a second line. |

Check out cain and abel, a pair of Windows apps that allow a PC to record VoIP calls. The PC and your VoIP adapter need to be on the same local area network, but need not be in the same room nor to be connected to each other. |

Another software option is Penbay Networks VOIP Recorder.
A free trial is available for download without registration from http://www.penbaynetworks.com/
You won't need a second ATA, your normal home LAN can do the work. VR is available for XP, Vista, Win 2000, OS X (10.5 and 10.6), and Linux. |

The way our connections are done is below.
Cable Modem -> Dlink Airplus Extreme Router -> LinkSys Vonage Adapter -> Phone.
Now my computer is downstairs using Dlink Wifi internet. How can I configure my PC to see the vonage phone adapter so I can record calls. I am trying to use wireshark here. |

You should be able to see the WAN side of your ATA from your PC. The question is: what is its IP address? Your PC and your ATA are probably each being assigned an IP address by the DHCP server that is built in to your D-Link router. I'm not familiar with the Airplus Extreme, but if it's like other D-Link routers, you can log into the router's administrative web page and view the IP addresses of all of its DHCP clients. Check the ATA's MAC address (on the label on its bottom) and look that up in the router's DHCP client address table.
Then, tell Wireshark to monitor the the ATA's IP address. You''ll find the calling and called phone numbers in the SIP packets, and the encoded audio in the RTP packets. |

My Dlink router DHCP List does not list the MAC address of Vonage ATA. I don't know why it is so. But my vonage is working alright. |

I'm not sure how your ATA could be functioning behind the D-Link router and not show up in the router's DHCP client list. Perhaps the ATA has been assigned a static IP address?
You don't say what ATA you're using. Is it a router? Can you plug a PC into its LAN side, and log into it, and view its WAN-side address? That would be the address you should be able to see from the PC when it is behind the same D-Link router. |
