I just cancelled my Vonage service because I want a service provider that supports BYOD on the primary number. I have two Linksys PAP2 ATAs and thought it was worth a try calling Vonage to see if they would give me the password so I could use them for something else.

They told me that the web interface is enabled by default and that the user ID and password are both "admin". I don't think either of those things are true. I had to use the "73738" reset command to reset the device to enable the web interface and then using "admin" as the user ID and "admin" as the password did not work to let into the device. Am I missing something or are the Vonage Tech Support people just giving me the wrong information? I called twice and spoke to two different people and they told me the same thing.

I have seen postings on other forums describing complicated procedures to unlock the device. I have used these devices for over three years and my firmware is at the latest level, so I don't think those procedures will work for me. I expected the Vonage Tech Support people to refuse to give me the password, not lie to me about the password.

Hot to configure Linksys ATA
According to what I read, there is no default password when the PAP2 is reset.

Thanks, but that information is only true with the Linksys firmware. Vonage updates the PAP2 firmwire with a version that uses special procedures to prevent users from accessing the admin functions.

1) You weren't lied to exactly. The basic level tier 2 support staff most likely does not understand which password you were looking for. You need the unique Admin password that is provisioned to your device, not a generic Admin Admin type username / password combo.

2) If they knew what you were looking for, they most likely would not know where to find it.

3) Just about all calls are monitored for QA and if someone did know where to find the password and released it to you, they would most likely be fired by the end of the day.

I can't find a place where admin/admin does anything on a PAP2, so I feel that it is misleading to tell a customer to use that combination. If that combination did something (such as allowing access to a limited set of functions), then that would make sense. I just don't understand why Vonage instructs their tech support people to convey clearly wrong information to their customers.

The PAP2 does not have a standard user web interface such as that as a router so that is why I said it does not use a generic username / password combo such as Admin / Admin. Once it is unlocked, it would have a Sipura type web interface just as if it was not a Vonage branded unit.

However, since the device is locked through the Vonage provisioning service, it has a unique password to your device. Tier 2 techs do not know this. It is above their understanding and comprehension. So what they are telling you to do is not anything Vonage has trained them to do or say. They are just assuming it is like a standard Linksys product which it is not.
