We have a foreign (Brazillian) exchange student living with us and she wishes to contact her parents back in Brazil.
Does Vonage cover Brazil as one of hte 60 countries that we can call on the basic $24.99 plan?
If not, how does one connect with a country not on the plan?

The 60 countries are free calling. Other countries are charged for ( see http://www.vonage.com/international_per-minute_rates// ) for what is free and what is charged for.
Please note, some countries landlines are free, but cell phone companies in those countries charge the calling number for a cell call. |

Do international calls actually work consistently these days?
I know in the past, they failed more often than they succeeded, and quality was veeeeeeery bad.
I recently tried calling the UK and it worked on the first try...so perhaps international calling has been upgraded? |

Brazil is covered if you currently have vonage you would have to call customer service and switch your plan to the vonage world plan to avoid being charged under the basic residential plan. Also note that only landline phones are covered within brazil no cell phones. any questions pm me and i would send you info for my store and you can call and discuss anything.
Thanks. |

I'm interested in the Netherlands and Germany. I am presently on the $24.99 Premium Unlimited plan (and have been so for years and made free unlimitted calls to the UK for a while). But now I take it that I have to call and switch to the $24.99 world plan? That is a little confusing to me. I guess my current plan has been withdrawn?? but not automatically switched?? If I had paid a year in advance, would I have been screwed making the switch from one 24.99 plan to the other 24.99 plan mid year? |

Change from 24.99 monthly residential plan is not automatic. you need to call Vonage to make the switch. But if you had the annual residential premium unlimited, switch to world plan will be automatic and it will still be annual (well, the remaining months, that is) |

Before you or anyone else begin calling internationally, maybe you should read my post here:
vonage-forum.com/ftopic24752.html" target="_blank">http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic24752.html
Perhaps it is a good idea that - before you call any international residential or business number - you place a 1 minute call to the number you which to call, and say hello to whoever answers and hang up. Wait 5 minutes and go to your Vonage account to check if you where charged for what you thought would be a free call.
If you don't see any charges applied, it is likely that the number you called is not considered by Vonage as a "cellular/premium" number, without being so.
But if you see any charges applied to your account, then you know that you will not get the call for free, and at least you will only pay for the 1 minute test call you placed. |
