Interesting... when I look up my current Vonage residential number at tnid.org, it shows:
Current Telephone Company:
Focal Communications Corporation
Original Telephone Company:
Verizon New Jersey Inc.
Original Telephone Company Type:
Regional Bell Operating Company (RBOC)
Apparently, Focal is one of Vonage's partner companies? |

Yes... Mine is odd too. It says a local carrier in the area that does enterprise voice. |

Yes Focal which is also Broadwing is owned by Level 3 and is one of many Vonage partner carriers. However, since Focal is a CLEC, it resells DID's to companies like Vonage and many others without LEC status. So it is possible for other VoIP providers with numbers in a specific LATA to also be with Focal.
Depending upon who owns numbers in a LATA will determine which partner carrier is used and is one reason why Vonage and companies like Vonage may not be able to offer numbers is all NPA-NXX's since only an ILEC has numbers there. Without having a CLEC available, numbers for that NPA-NXX cannot be obtained. ILEC's like Verizon and AT&T are not going to partner with smaller VoIP providers and terminate calls to them. |
