We are brand new to Vonage. Calls are dropping left and right. I suspect the default setup needs to be tweaked? I haven't called customer service yet since I assume I will be talking to a generic phone bank in India instead of a real Customer service person.
All of the calls we have made have been dropped after about 5 minutes. From what I can gather from surfing this forum I wonder if I may get better results by assigning a static IP. What do you think? Here is my data:
1) Tacoma, WA
2) Net-Venture - cable
3) up - 543 kbps /down - 8192 kbps
4) Toshiba PCX2600
5) VDV21
6) PCX2600 ->D-Link DI-524 -> VDV21 -> PC
7) dropping calls - lots
voip test -
Error...
load: class myspeed.class not found.
java.lang.ClassN
As you can see the voip test doesn't even run for me. I also tried another web-based version and it wouldn't run either. It mentioned something about SIP, or that my ISP may be blocking something?
I went to myspeed.visualware.com and got the following data:
Download speed 1213 Kbps
Upload speed 759 Kbps
D/load QOS 48 %
U/load QOS 98 %
RTT 94 ms
Max Delay 188 ms
Avg Delay 10 ms
Max Bandwidth 10400 Kbps
Route Speed 5577 Kbps
Forced Idle 48 %
Route Conc 8.5
It also told me I had 2.7ms avg jitter (2.7 to server/5.8 from it) and an estimated MOS score of 3.8.
I am not sure I quite understand where the IP needs to be set if I did this. I can get to the DLink admin page, the Vonage WebUI, and know where to find the TCP/IP properties. Or would I do better by setting up my devices differently or even leave out the DLink? Sometimes the kids need to access the web so i'd rather keep it in the equation. Sometimes they do so wirelessly, sometimes wired.
Thanks

Take it from someone who knows, first thing to do is to replace that cable modem you have with another. Preferrably a Motorola Surfboard model such as 5101,5120,....etc. After that if you are still experiencing issues then go to Cable modem>vportal>dlink, if that does not work for you then log into the "newer" cable modem (which you cannot do with the one you have I believe) and check the modem's logs for errors and signal levels. Contact your ISP for this as well. Good luck!
P.S. you said that your download speeds are suppose to be around 8mb however you indicated the test showed around 1.x mb? If this is true with the pc connected directly to the cable modem then contact the ISP and asked them to check your line and modem signal levels. (Also you indicated poor QOS numbers and latency) |

OK, before going out and getting a Surfboard, I reconfigured the devices per your recommendation. It seems to have helped already. Here are the new numbers;
VoIP test statistics
--------------------
Jitter: you --> server: 2.6 ms
Jitter: server --> you: 5.9 ms
Packet loss: you --> server: 0.0 %
Packet loss: server --> you: 0.0 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Estimated MOS score: 4.0
Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 1463248 bps
Upload speed: 770920 bps
Download quality of service: 97 %
Upload quality of service: 99 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum TCP delay: 72 ms
Average download pause: 8 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 96 ms
Average round trip time to server: 98 ms
Estimated download bandwidth: 11200000bps
Route concurrency: 7.654205
Download TCP forced idle: 53 %
Maximum route speed: 5461248bps
These look like it may help my problem just by doing the rearranging. Time will tell, of course. Did anything improve obviously? I did the test several times and got similar results. Will getting the new modem help even more?
We pay for 10MB and if I use a server in Tacoma the test shows a little over 9. If I use one in Chicago it goes down to 3. I assume the servers I hit for that test are either far away or very busy. Same for MySpeed I guess.
I assume you have had substantial issues with the PCX2600? I tried to connect to it but the documentation indicates that only Comcast can do that. Go figure. Anyway, thanks for the help and suggestions.
