When I received my Vonage router (Linksys RT31PT) I connected it directly to my internet connection (I have Verizon FIOS fiber to the home) and then my D-Link wireless to the Linksys. Everything seemed to work fine. But outgoing SMTP (Verizon based email) was failing. I got a connection error. Incoming worked fine.

I switched the two routers around so the D-Link connected to the internet first and then chained the Vonage Linksys off of that. Now everything works fine. So I have two questions:

1. Is there any downside to connecting the Vonage router behind the D-Link?
2. Any idea as to why the Linksys was stopping outgoing SMTP?

I would really like to have the Linksys first and plug my LAN cables into it instead of the D-Link as I tend to think of the Linksys routers to be a bit more stable than the D-Links.

it'd be better to have the linksys first, mainly for QoS reasons.
one time I had an issue with my network where I couldn't use local addresses (i.e. pop-server and smtp-server would usually resolve for me, but I messed something up and they weren't) so I had to use the full address (pop-server.tampabay.rr.com, smtp-server.tampabay.rr.com) to get it to work. is there a chance your smtp server is set to a local address that can't be resolved and your pop server isn't?
by the way, where do you live? I wish fios was here...

The SMTP address is a fully qualified domain name - that is it is something like "outgoin.verizon.net" for both incoming and outgoing. So unfortunately that is not the issue. And when I swapped the routers it worked fine. So it appears to be a configuration issue with the Linksys router.

I thought the same about QoS. Not really sure it is a big deal w/ 100 Mb links but between that and the Linksys reputation for reliability I would like to put them back.

As far as FIOS goes I live in the Dallas metro area and we are one of the first to get it (3rd city I believe). It will be rolling out in other areas too. You might want to check broadbandreports.com for your area. The big up speed doesn't hurt for Voip at all! Lol

do you have a computer you can plug directly into the RT31P2 just to see if it will work directly through it? and then give it a shot through the dlink as well.

Yeah, that is exactly how I had it setup at first. While I had the D-Link connected to the Linksys I had my PC connected to one of the other 2 Ethernet ports on the Linksys and that was when I could not connect to an outbound mail server. (The D-Link is only there for wireless access.) In fact I had 2 PCs connected to those 2 Ethernet ports and neither could connect to the outgoing mail server.

If I didn't know better I would have sworn it was blocking port 25 out, but that makes no sense. But port 80 works (HTTP) and port 110 works (POP 3). I know port forwarding will do me no good as that is for automomous (inbound) requests. So I am stumped.

BTW, if you didn't gather I have a strong networking background - I suppose that is partly what is driving this.

yeah I agree with the port block but I couldn't find anything (easy) like that in the RT31P2 setup. can you post the exact error message?

Is there a log file you can check to see what happens when you attempt a SMTP session?

What happens if you manually attempt an SMTP session? telnet to port 25 from your failing device to the mail server and see what comes up.

I don't think there is a log file. I can, however copy off the error message. I also thought about hooking up a sniffer and seeing what is going through via the Linksys vs. the D-Link. But really that is more work than I want to do.

I'll move everything back and post the error message tonight.

Great idea. I should have thought of that before. I'll telnet it tonight too. Lot easier than sniffing . Smile Thanks
