I tried changing the MTU and it didn't make a difference. I also tried the following config

cable<--->linksys befw11s4<-->linksys rt31p2
|
|-- desktop
|-- laptop
|
|-- desktop 2

Desktop 2 was plugged into the rt31p2. When I unplugged the rt31p2 and plugged the desktop into befw11s4, sending email worked. When I plugged the rt31p2 back into the network as shown above, the email sending stopped working.

Email sending from the laptop works just fine.

The major difference is that the laptop and desktop 1 is in the same room as the befw1124. Desktop 2 is downstairs which means about 50ft or so as the cat5 cable goes.

Everything else on desktop 2 appears to work fine. I can get email fine as well as web browse and IM.

What effect does rt31p2 have on the bandwidth? Is it sucking up too much along with desktop 2's distance from the switch that it's causing a problem with the upload?

Would this also have an effect on the lower channels of my cable tv? Channels 2-5 are really bad at times. My cable is split as it enters the house. One goes to the cable modem and the other goes to all the TV outlets. This one is split a couple more times before the TV that has the bad reception. I have ordered a Motorola signal booster in hopes that this will help. Should it go before the modem/tv split or after?

Thanks for the help and suggestions.

Oops! my character art didn't pan out. All of the computers are plugged into the befw11s4 switch.

No, routers don't "suck up" bandwidth - they just use what the devices connected to them need. And as for your TV the cable modem and the TV channels are unrelated (I would have the cable company check out the TV part - may just be that the cable signal **** 0 that is why I am on satillite).

What kind of email is it? I would guess POP3. Second what kind of error message are you getting and on what kind of mail program (outlook express, outlook 2003, Thunderbird)?

I am using Outlook Express and POP3. Receiving email is usually no problem. The email I am sending is simply 'test' for the subject and 'test' for the text and sending to myself.

I don't have the error code on me. Usually its a timeout, I get a popup saying the server hasn't responded, do you want to wait another 60 seconds. I have increased the timeout but that didn't help. The other error is that the server unexpectedly terminated the connection.

On my other machines, which are in the same room as the switch and modem, have no problem with email. They do, however, have problems with NNTP.

well, MTU size was an issue because I am on a PPPoE connection. If you're not that is not your issue. Also since you said the message was test with little or no text that eliminates MTU.

Can't speak for NNTP as I don't use Usenet. But I would try to put the rt31p2 first in line because 1. Better QoS on voice - this is why I worked at it and 2. the rt31p2 is designed to have other routers chained off of it - can't say if your other router is. After that we could look at ports by telneting you POP3 server.

telnet'ing to the SMTP server on port 25 works fine.

I will try putting the rt31p2 first and see what happens. That is the one thing I haven't tried yet.

Thanks.
