PostPosted: Mon Aug 24, 2009 12:54 am    Post subject: moved to area where Vonage has no local numbers, what to do? Reply with quote Back to top

I've had Vonage since March 2008.... under the $24.95
unlimited plan. Never had a problem with the service.

I just moved to another state and Vonage does not have
local numbers for this city. Nearest place that Vonage
offers local numbers is about 55 miles away.

Vonage will probabaly charge me a temination fee to
cancel my account, no? Or can they offer me a lower
rate to keep my old exisiting number for a while?

Basically, I'm trying to find out what they usually offer
to keep people from cancelling. I'm willing to stay with
Vonage and wait until they offer local numbers to my new
city..... if they offer me a lower rate as compensation? Smile

You could call customer service and tell them your problem. Then ask for reduced rate, you might just get lucky Wink

I guess I got lucky... Smile

Still can't get a local number, because Vonage doesn't offer
it in this part of the state....

However, the nice rep offered me 6 free months to stay
with Vonage. My monthly bill is about $29. ($24.99
plus taxes) $29 x 6 = $174. She had to enter each
free month individually... but at the end of the call, I checked
my online account and it reflected 6 credits of $29 each.

By the way, I ddin't even ask for this. The rep just offered
it to me during the phone call.

I'm paying the local landline phone company for a local
phone number with basic service. It's $12 per month, or
about $144, plus taxes for one year.

So the $174 free credit that Vonage offered me will more
than cover the $144 fee that I'm paying the local landline
phone company for the local number! Smile

I must say I'm quite happy with Vonage's good will
gesture! Smile

I'm stunned that Vonage can afford to do that but retention is their business.

I was just going to offer that moving to a phone number out of state where people calling you have to cross a state line will create a cheaper long distance solution than picking a number in a nearby town. I'm not sure many of us still have landlines that charge for long distance but it will be cheaper for those that do. The most expensive LD is intra-LATA.

Another thought is to apply for a Google Voice trial and see if they have local numbers that can be delivered to your existing Vonage number. I have seen most people applying getting appoved in under 5 days now.

The Google Voice is a good option. I have had it since it was called Grand Central and generally it works pretty well.

I use it for Business, for people I want to talk to no matter where I am at. It will simulring my cell, VOIP and my work phone.

It also has its own VM, which it transcribes and sends in text form (like Vonages Visual Voicemail) . . . very handy.
