I am a new Vonage user, I am still waiting for the modem, but I am spending an awful lot of time trying to figure out which 2-line phone should I get for my home based computer repair/support business.

I will have my personal land line hooked up to it along with the Vonage business line. I am considering either a corded 2-line phone like Aastra 9120, 9316, 9417cw or a corded/cordless combo, with a good full duplex speaker phone and headset capability.

I am looking for a good quality and solid phone with the quality of Nortel Meridian (Aastra) or other reliable phones.

Does anyone have any suggestion considering that it also should be compatible with Vonage voicemail, call waiting and other features?

For example I read this posting from 2004, that mentioned a flaw with Aastra 9417 and the voicemail indicator, so these are things that I am hoping to avoid by making an "intelligent" choice.

I use a Aastra 9417CW (2 line) and 9316CW (1 line) phones without any problems. I think they're some of the best analog phones around: the sound quality is good, the handset isn't uncomfortable to use, and they have both the Caller ID screen and voicemail waiting indicator light.

Lower model numbers (8417, 8316) do not support Caller ID or voicemail waiting indicator even though they have an LCD screen and light. You'll note that they also don't have "CW" in the model number. If you were to place both the "CW" and non "CW" models next to each other they would look identical except that the "CW" ones have a larger LCD screen.

Thanks for the reinforcement on the Astra line, I am probably going to get a 9417CW, until now (thanks to you) I wasn't aware of the difference between a phone with and without the CW in the model#.

Have you tried to connect another NON Aastra phone on the same line with the 9417CW?

I already gave up on finding a durable corded/cordless 2-line phone, so I was thinking, maybe I would get a good quality cordless phone for my land line, but in this case it would share that line with the Aastra 9417CW. So, I was wondering how the two phones would behave on the same line - of course using only one of them at a time.

I have 2 9417CWs and a 9316CW plus a 2-line Uniden cordless phone. No problems with any of them. I forget the model number but I think its been discontinued. It does not have an answering machine but it does have the message waiting indicator that works with voicemail.

And do you use a headset with the 9417CW?
According to the user manual you have to disconnect the handset from the base and connect the headset to the base plus go through some menu hoopla in order to turn the headset mode on or off.

If you're using headset, do you know an easier way of switching between the two especially if you're already on a call with someone?

I found the Aastra 9120 2-line phone, which is similar to the 9417CW, but cost less and it does have a dedicated 2.5mm headset jack (in which the headset gets detected automatically, no need for going into the menu) on the right side of the unit, I am considering getting that because of this jack.
