Ok, I know the rules on these things and I've tried to read the countless post that have to do with my prob, but I read them and I get more and more confused. I'm a dentist, not a computer dude.
Ok, here goes, I have a Cable modem, Motorola SB5100, a Linksys WRT54G (Wireless G) and the new vonage/Linksys RT31P2. I set them up in this order: Cable modem to Wireless G from the wireless G I had the computer and the Vonage router plugged into one of the four ports on the back. I get a dial tone and the phone works fine, I can talk on the phone and use my laptop wirelessly without any noticable slowing down. But the PC that is wired into the back of the Wireless G crawls on the net or doesn't move at all when I'm on the phone. Once I hang up, it's back to full speed on the PC. I'm getting a bit from the other posts, like I think I should put the Vonage rounter first. but how do I go about setting up all these IP address stuff. Should I use the setup CD that came with the Vonage router and the setup CD that came with the wireless router to set them both up. I'm really confused and I know there has to be some other guys out there that don't know an IP address from their Zip code. Please help, my wife is pissed she can't talk on the phone and surf on her computer at the same time. And try to dumb it down, hell, I'm a dentist!

One thing to try: remove the 54G from the loop. Put the new router in plugged into the cable modem, and plug your computer into 1 of the 3 ports of the RT31P2. Make sure after you make this change that you cycle the power on your cable modem so that it will recognize the new router. Also make sure your computer knows that it is plugged into a different router, either by renewing the IP or just rebooting it. See if it works fine then. If not, you would seem to have a faulty RT31P2.

If it does work fine, then you could just put the 54G inline AFTER the RT31P2, but in order for wireless people to get online you need to disable the DHCP setting in the 54G. You would need to plug a cable from 1 of the 3 outputs on the RT31P2 into one of the 4 ports on the 54G. DO NOT plug it into the WAN port on the 54G, it will not work. Then to disable the DHCP on the 54G, you need to plug your computer into 1 of the 4, and login from your web browser to 192.168.1.1, blank username and password of admin. On that first page, about half way down, set DHCP to DISABLE.

Then the 54G will reboot, and you can either leave your computer plugged into the 54G or plug it back into the RT31P2. You will need to renew your IP again, either by going into your network control panel and repairing the LAN connection, or by rebooting. Your computer should then pull an IP from the RT31P2, even if it is plugged into the 54G. Hopefully everything will be working good then.

You can adjust the WRT54G's Quality of Service if you have the latest firmware either from linksys or even one of the other 3rd parties (sveasoft, hyperwrt). You can set it so that your Vonage traffic will play nicely with all other traffic. First of all make sure your WRT54G's firmware is up to date from Linksys. Smile

Harry,

I feel your pain, I have had a very similar problem just setting up my Vonage phone for the first time this weekend, and it is painful for a Bell South DSL person! I was just used to picking up the phone and it worked! I plugged the router into the DSL modem and it would not connect, then after finally trying to get Vonage Tech support (30 minutes of hold time), they told me to make my DSL modem go into Bridge mode instead of router mode. I did that and I finally got dial tone. So that worked, or so I thought, now my internet is very intermitten, everytime I reboot the computer (it is plugged into the WRT54GP2) not the Lynksys Wireless, it looses the setting and does not connect to the internet, so what I have to do is go back into the WRT54GP2 router and save the settings every time. The wireless works until I turn off the main computer, and my ethernet link light on the DSL modem is constantly blinking, not to mention dropped calls every time. I'm not very happy, and I'm trying to stick it out, but it doesn't look good. I wish I could get the help I needed from Vonage Tech support, and I do work with this stuff at work, its not that difficult.
