I am already Vonage subscriber, but I would like to get another service for my parents in India.
So when Vonage sends me the Phone adapter (get new local area code number as my area code), Can I send that to my parents in India and let them use it from there? (they got High speed internet connection there)
That way the calls between me and my parents are free (as Vonage to Vonage) - Ofcourse I pay extra $15 for their service. ( my international longdistance cost more than $50)
Of course my parents either can call me or receive calls from me, apart from that they won't be using much for the Vonage phone service. (If they call their neighbour it will be international call
BTW, I am not sure about the Indian govt. regulations regarding the Voip. |

Thanks for the quick reply.
I guess I overestimated my plans.
I don't understand the restriction. Could be b'cos of 9/11?
Y'day I was reading the article about Voip in Consumer Reports, it mentioned the Dept. of Justice having second thoughts on this system, as they no longer can snoop on to the phone conversations just like they do on landline phones.
If Feds want that accomdation then they have to decipher every chat message, every email, every web request and every phone call from the Adapter/Computer. As it tough to findout which packet contains the secret information. Talk about right violations
Correct me if I am wrong. |

I don't see that as a significant issue. Unless it's Vonage to Vonage, the call has to be dumped onto the PSTN eventually. I also don't believe that (a) Vonage can track every minute of call time associated with your number, yet (b) nobody can monitor the content of its traffic.
If anything, now that our calls are routed across the public internet, anyone with a sniffer and access to an intermediate router or switch can eavesdrop on our calls. I believe there exists a need for encryption between the user's TA and the Vonage gateway, for this very reason.
