That's really an opinion question but the RTP300 is slightly better as a router and the voice module chipset is identical. The voice module chipset is made by TI in both and use similar firmware so as a telephone adapter they are the same.
The reason why you would have gotten an RTP300 in place of the VT2442 is because when the order hit the warehouse, if the VT2442 was out of stock, they will ship an equivalent model. This being the RTP300 since it is a 2 phone port 4 LAN port router. They have to do this as if a customer had a defective device, they need to get a replacement out as soon as possible so the customer is not sitting without a phone for an extended period of time while they wait on VT2442's.
