If I sign up with Vonage, it is possible to get a new local area number.

We have been bothered for 2 months with someone who is trying to send a fax to our private residential number. AT&T has been NO help.
They say it will go away in a while. Fax calls at 3 AM are extremely annoying.

If we keep our old number, does Vonage provide an "identify and BLOCK" a nuisance number. I know they offer standard services like call waiting, call forwarding etc.

If I choose Vonage over a similar service from our cable company (priced much higher), what are the consequences? Sounds like the cable company service is their usual rip-off.

Local to what? Since Vonage is not a local phone company, they will not have every single local market throughout the US so the answer would depend upon the rate center your current phone number comes from.

There is a banner on the right hand side of the page you can use to check if you can keep your number. If you can keep your number, you can port it to Vonage or will most likely be able to get a local number assigned to you.

Vonage DOES NOT currently offer a Selective Call Block feature so if you were to port your number to Vonage, chances are you may still get that annoying Fax call since your number is most likely programed into an autodialer somewhere.

The only thing that you may consider a consequence is that with a cable provider, your cost could go up dramatically after the initial product offering expires. Say you get a triple play offer from your local cable provider for $99.00 a month. This usually will last for 6 - 12 months and then after that, it can increase significatly. Outside of that, you would not notice a difference.

Vonage does not provide that service. However call blocking (based on either number or caller-id info) is a feature of Voip Recorder. VR is software written by my unaffiliated company that you can run in conjunction with your existing Vonage service. There is a free trial download available at http://www.penbaynetworks.com/
