My download speed is 3MB, but my upload speed is 256K at best. Callers frequently complain about static or garbled speech. If changed all cables as well as 'Call Quality'. The same results.
Will increasing my upload speed help? |

Who knows???
When you say that your upload is 256 at best, that is only marginally helpful. Fluctuations in your call quality will be more in relation to your upload at it worst during the call.
However, on the upper call quality, will require 90kbps upload. So you theoretically have some room there but other devices concurrently on the internet will affect that as well.
So to really answer your question you need to post the info asked for in the sticky at the top of the forum |

Can you search google for a VoIP speed test and paste the results? |

I found a few sites with VoIP speed tests and my upload speed almost always seemed marginal.
I contacted my ISP (Mediacom) and upgraded to 8MB Download and 512K Upload and I've made and received a few calls today with no issues - finally. I'm actually averaging 7.7MB Download and 7.1KB Upload.
Now get this, the higher speed is costing me $10/Month less than the slower service, then after a year it goes back up to what I was paying for the slower service. Go figure... |

You have to love marketing... At any rate, as long as your phone is working well, that is what matters. |

Speed test sites won't help you unless they measure jitter and packet loss as well. Most do not. Try this Voip Test and report back with the results. Ideally you want a MOS score of 3.5 or better. Remember, a decent quality Voip call will use about 96kbps. You can get away with less in many cases so long as your QOS is decent. To measure the QOS for your internet connection try this TCP Quality Test and post the results.
Don't confuse the TCP test with a speed test. It does report speed but that's not what it's purpose is. For consistently good Voip calls you need to maintain a QOS in the mid 90's. It will rate your QOS for you. |
