Hello Everyone, I'm hoping someone can help our family.

We're being transferred to RAF Lakenheath and want to know if we can use the Vonage Voip? I believe British Telecom has cable internet service there, so we will probably sign up with them for access and a phone for local calls if that makes sense.

I understand that if I use Vonage Voip that a call from Lakenheath is considered local if I call to the U.S., but if I use it to call my British neighbor it's considered overseas. Is that correct?

My main concern is that my beautiful bride can call her mom or sisters whenever she wants without me having to sell my car to pay for it. I'll be going back and forth to Iraq and Afghanistan, so the system HAS to work for her. I would use a cell phone, but I hear reception is limited at best in Lakenheath.

Any comments, tips, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You can use Vonage anywhere you can get a Broadband internet connection, the ISP does not block or restrict Voip, and you have sufficient bandwidth and line quality. A British Telcom DSL connection works fine as that is what many Vonage UK users have.

I assume you want a Vonage US account not a Vonage UK account so that you can choose a US number that is local to your family in the US. This way calls from Vonage to the US are free and incoming calls from your family would be local for them as well.

Calls from a Vonage US account to most numbers in the UK are also free under the Unlimited calling plan for $24.99.

Vonage's Residential Premium Unlimited Plan offers the following for the low price of $24.99 a month†:

* Unlimited local and long distance in the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico
* FREE calls to landline phones in Italy, France, Spain, UK and Ireland

The reason this is noted is because this does not include calling mobile UK or premium UK numbers. These calls would be billed as international calls while calls to landline UK numbers would be included in the plan.

You could even purchase a UK Virtual number for $4.99 a month as an add-on which would allow callers in the UK to reach you at no charge to them as it would be like they were calling their neighbor.

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your help. I didn't think about friends and relatives calling us! Thanks for pointing out the obvious.

Would this UK "virtual number" allow us to call out as a local call too, or would we have to make other arrangements for that?

Thank you again for your help!

To purchase a US account you need a US biilling and shipping address plus a US credit card or bank account. To purchase a UK account, you need a UK billing and shipping address and a UK credit card or bank account.

A virtual number is just an alias to your physical phone number. You cannot call out from it. When calling out your always calling from the primary number on your account. So on a US account, you would have a US number from which you could call all US phone numbers for free under the Unlimited plan and also call UK landlines at no additional cost. If you were to call a UK mobile number, you would be charged an International fee.

If you have a US account but you were physically located in the UK and you have a US phone number that is local to your US based family, it would not cost them anything to call you. If you then purchased the additional UK virtual number that is local to your UK based family, it would cost them nothing to call you.

All this virtual number does is take inbound calls and redirect them to the primary physical number on your account. It is transparent to the person calling it. To them you have a local UK phone number.

Vonage offers Virtual numbers in the UK, Spain, Italy, Mexico, France, and Ireland as well as in the US and Canada. So if you needed to be local to more then one person, you can order as many virtual numbers as you need to give you a local presence to your friends and family while maintaining one actual phone number from which all your calls are actually placed from. Each virtual number will cost $4.99 a month for unlimited inbound calling in addition to the $24.99 a month for the Unlimited calling plan.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
