Hi - just received my Vonage V-Portal and want to install it tonight when I get home. However, there is something I'm not clear on in the instructions.

My current setup is as follows:
DSL Modem (unsure of the model) ---> Linksys WRT160Nv2 router ---> 100baseT switch ----> CAT-5 jacks across my house.

I would like to plug in the V-Portal directly into one of my LAN ports in my office. However, reading the instructions, I'm not clear if the V-Portal should be sitting between the router and the DSL? I'd really rather not do this, since my modem and the router are in a hidden corner of the basement. I want this device actually sitting in my office so I can plug a business phone in, without having to do any additional wiring to make that phone available.

Any advice?

It will likely be fine to do it as you want. try it out and see. (you will plug the blue internet port of the v-portal into the lan port because that is the source of the internet for the v-portal)

The only thing you lose is the ability for the v-portal to prioritize Voip traffic to/from the wan. You can read up on your router's manual to see if it has a similar function that you can apply to the v-portal's address and or ethernet port. It might.

also - if your router has firewall features, then attaching it to your existing switch as you suggest is also nice because it does not put the ATA directly on to the Internet.

In a related vein, I have a LAN user who often turns on utorrent and is too damn lazy to bother tweaking it not to consume all the bandwidth. Would putting the TA in front of the router alleviate some of that congestion as it relates ONLY to the phone? Because otherwise the utorrent can render the phone unusable.

Either you take care of your QoS settings in your router and you can install the Vonage device anywhere, or you put the phone adapter in front of the router, so it can prioritize traffic.

This all depends on your bandwidth of course. Since comcast upgraded the bandwidth on my connection (Download Speed: ~ 25000 kbps and (more important) Upload Speed: ~4000 kbps), I simply turned QoS completely off and still have excellent phone service whilst using a torrent.

In your case: put the Vonage device upfront and he should be good to go.

If you're going to torrent I would strongly suggest putting QoS rules into place to give the RTP and SIP connections a much higher priority that the torrents as they will saturate every last bit they can.
