I've had some problems setting up Voip with my netgear dg384g v4 modem/router. When I connect my Vonage router, I get a very choppy connection line. The internet connection is fine, and wireless and other functions of the netgear work fine.
If I use a 2Wire modem/router, the Voip connection is fine.
Is there something I'm missing with the netgear settings or some inherent incompatibility with this netgear device?
I have already set my Vonage settings for lowest bandwidth, and internet connection speeds are the same whether I use the netgear or 2wire device.

Just for clarification, why wouldn't you just stick with the 2Wire device?

The old 2wire modem/router, when it works, is fine, but has had a habit of shorting out unpredictably or dropping the internet connection, as well as dropping wireless connections.
The netgear dg384g has kept a reliable dsl internet connection, as well as great wireless connections, but doesn't seem to like the Vonage Voip router.

I'd just call your DSL provider and tell them the 2-wire is shorting out. I'm sure they would provide you another. I don't want to sound rude... but I've never been a fan of Netgear.

My old 2wire is out of warranty, so I'd have to pay out of pocket for a new router/modem. I already have the netgear around.

Anyway, while you were trying to distract me from my original question, I solved the problem!

The solution - it's all about port forwarding.

I set up a new service, titled Vonage Voip, and added ports 5060 through 5070.

That makes absolutely no sense at all. You said your issue was audio related.

1) Your Vonage adapter doesn't even use any ports in the 5060 to 5070 range.
2) SIP signaling takes place on port 10000 for both source and Destination. This is the port the Vonage adapter uses for Registration and for call set up.
3) Once a call is established, the Vonage adapter will use a random port between 10050 and 10150 for source. The destination port at the Media Relay will be random.

So as you can see, port forwarding of UDP ports 5060 - 5070 aren't even in use with Vonage service so I cannot see how forwarding unused ports could correct an audio problem.

On top of that, port forwarding is designed to allow packets from internet to LAN on services hosted on a LAN computer where they are not initiating traffic to the internet. An example would be a web server. Since the Vonage adapter sends a Registration packet to the Proxy every 20 seconds, this keeps the NAT pinhole open on port 10000. When the call is set up, audio from the Media Relay is not sent to the Vonage adapter until the Vonage adapter sends it's RTP packets out which then opens up the pinhole for the audio session. In neither scenario would port forwarding be useful or actually perform a function it was designed to do.

The only thing I could see that would correct choppy audio through this model router would be disabling the SPI portion of the firewall if available since it could be inspecting each packet which in turn can cause added delay in the real time stream. The added delay in turn could either increase the amount of jitter or completely discard packets leaving you with choppy audio.
