Post subject: DLink DIR-655 and Vonage V-Portal
I have my
Vonage
V-Portal behind (I think) my Dlink DIR655. My question is, should I have a DNS Server adderss(static) set up on my Dlink router or let the V-Portal take care of the DNS settings. When looking at the V-Portal I can't see that there is a way to set the DNS Servers. Right now they are being pulled auto... I would guess.
When I am on my laptop the IP settings say 192.168.0.x but the Dlink says the WAN IP address is not pulling from Road Runner it says the IP is 192.168.15.2 but the default gateway is the ip of the V-Portal. And the DNS server is 65.24.7.xx but when I look at the V-Portal the DNS server says it is 65.31.113.xx. Is there a bottle neck here somewhere?

All that is happening here is that the main router is pulling the DNS servers via the ISP's DHCP server. It passes those same addresses on to its clients. Some routers will use a local cache on the router and point the local DHCP clients to the router's address to resolve. It really doesn't matter because I doubt you're blocking UDP/53 which is DNS. As such you could probably connect through all layers of your local network.
