Is there a way to change the connection order from router >> vonage >> computer to router >> computer >> vonage? I'm living in a basement suite and sharing the cable bill and connection with my landlords upstairs, who happen to have the modem and router. This makes plugging the Vonage unit into the router a bit of a problematic task.
If the unit can pass the internet through to my computer, shouldn't I be able to pass internet through to it? If not through my computer, what about via a bridge? |

Apparently, your landlord makes available to you a single ethernet cable from their router. You could connect this cable to the WAN port of the Vonage device and then connect your PC to the LAN port of the Vonage device. Alternatively, you could plug that cable into a hub (or switch) and then connect your PC and your Vonage device to two other ports of the hub.
I'm not sure why you would want to pass the Internet connection to the computer through the PC, but to do that, you would need to add a second ethernet port to the PC and then enable Internet Connection Sharing in the PC. |

Sorry, I guess I forgot to mention that we connect via wireless, not via an ethernet cable, otherwise this question would be moot as I could simply connect the vonage box in proper manner.
I think what you meant to say was why would I want to pass the internet connect to VoIP through the computer, and I think this becomes apparent when I mention the wireless connection. Because I don't have access to the router or a cable from it. I already tried plugging it in to my computers lan port and enabling internet connection sharing off the wireless connection but to no avail. I'm going to go pull my ol' linksys wet54g (bridge) out of storage today and see if I can jerry rig it through that, since the bridge acts like a local gateway.
Thanks for the help,

Okay, I got it working, and now I've got a new problem. I tricked the Vonage into thinking it was connected to a router by connecting it via my linksys bridge, and it works now. Updated from the server, the whole nine.
The only problem is it's not letting the internet through to the computer now. The Vonage box gets an internet connection but it does not pass it on to the computer. Gotta run out right now but I'll check the manual when I get home to make sure things are set up correctly, though I thought it should just pass it through automatically... |

I've talked to people with this connection before. If I have it correctly this is your setup.
Landlord cable modem>wireless router
---- your apartment -----
Wireless bridge talking to the landlord's wireless router > ethernet from bridget to vonage device's WAN port > vonage's LAN port > computer
This setup should work just fine. You should receive a 192.168.15.x address. What happens when you try to access the internet? |
