Vonage looks like a great service. I also asked my father (lives outside of USA) to look at the web sites. When he attempt to access either vonage-forum.com" target="_blank">www.vonage-forum.com or www.vonage-promotion.com he receives the following mesage (blank and dash lines removed):
"Forbidden
You don't have permission to access / on this server.
Apache/1.3.28 Server at vonage-forum.com Port 80"
He can access www.vonage.com.
I understand the access from outside the US is not supported and that there may be voice quality issues. However, I am surprised the access to the forum is not possible. I hope this does not mean that some IP addresses are actively being blocked which goes beyond not-supported.
I would guess that something else is happening. I notice that I can ping vonage-forum.com" target="_blank">www.vonage-forum.com by name. I can also ping by IP address (learned from ping by name). However, if I attempt to browse from Windows IE using the IP address, a totally unrelated page shows. At this point my ignorance get me in real trouble.
Any guess as to why the access was forbidden and / or work around.
Thanks, |

I get this message when I try to open www.vonage.com:
Forbidden
You were denied access because:
Access denied by access control list.
I am living in Mexico but it used to work here.
I'm useing Safari on MacOSX
Anyway, to log in to my account I have to use google's archive of Vonage's webpage! Long live Google! Saviour of our butts!
BTW i still can't access the Help and Contact areas because they aren't on the secure server which is the only one that I can apparently conect to.
I can use Canada's Vonage site tho.
O well, life ****, then you die.
If anyone has the same problem try:
https://secure.vonage.com/vonage-web/
to log in. |

Interesting idea. Vonage is giving out phone numbers here in Mexico though. At the same time I wouldn't put it passed some of the monopolies that they have here blocking the competition. My ISP (DSL) is prodigy which has an exclusive agreement with Telmex, the only phone company; like the bad old days in the US.

"Access Control List"s are usually 'installed' by your ISP. They are also initialized on web servers for security. This is a way of preventing access to certain web sites, ports, etc and usually for security reasons or to keep employees from porn surfing, going to Kazaa, etc. If your ISP utilizes a "Proxy Server" this could also be the cause. Most proxy servers have this as a basic function. If this is the case, perhaps a quick call to your ISP is in order? Wonder if they're wanting to start their own VOIP and want to keep their customers from finding the competition...hmmm, interesting.
Another possible reason: if you use a dynamic IP address (as most people do) it could be possible that your IP segment has been banned due to misuse (spamming, etc.). Just a thought. |

Completely understand! Just out of curiosity: have you tried going to the url via an "annonymizer" (spell?) such as http://www.anonymization.net/ ? Sometime that will allow a user through the proxy (if this is the case) if it is poorly configured.[/url] |

I believe what they are talking about, are not ACL (Access Controll Lists) on routers, but on the web servers themselves.
if a router ACL blocked something, the browser would simply say, unable to connect, or something to that effect.
That type of error leads me to believe there may be a configured list of IP's or ranges that are in the web server itself as 'bad ranges' where anyoen coming from those ranges are unable to connect to the website. |

I ended up with a double post by re-editing it and how can I delete one of them?
The only work around I see is writing a completely new post (which you are reading). |
