We moved to France last year, and have been using our Vonage successfully for almost 9 months. All of sudden, no dial tone.
Though our airport wireless to their DSL Wanadoo, is working without any problems.
Have talked to Vonage, have checked the ports, have opened other ports... all are blocked.Obviously they are not in favor of VOIP....Anyone have any suggestions, how to get around it?
Very frustrated with this... Using SKYPE now for all our calls. At least they can't block SKYPE. |

Using a US based Voip service in Mexico is ILLEGAL! This applies to GRNGOS as well as Mexican Nationals, as the Mexican constitution is in favor of Mexicans having the advantage in legal matters, so therefore a foreigner can not be privelidged in a legal matter over a Mexican. THAT IS CONSTITUTIONAL LAW! Dont say "Im a gringo so I can get away with it"!
for information on legal status, please see http://www.voip-info.org/tiki-index.html?page=VoIP+International+Legal+Status
Any Voip provider offering services in Mexico must have approriate licences to do so. Vonage, clearly does not, and therefore does not offer its' services in Mexico.
For further information Telmex is now blocking ports for IP telephony. It is somewhat regional, and some may have problems, while others do not, right away at least. Unfortunately, the proliferation of ILLEGAL services will now make it harder for the use of LEGAL services. What those using Vonage and other US Based services are doing is making it so that the ISPs will block all ports to both legal and illegal services! This will stick us all with traditional telephony

I am a Vonage user from a vacation home in los cabos mexico. this was initially set up last fall and is connected via telmex's prodigy infinitum dsl broadband service which uses a speedstream 5200 modem. it worked fine through late february. then suddenly in march the Voip was garbled. I spent a lot of time on the Vonage tech support line and they concluded that my adapter may have a problem so they sent me a replacement adapter (a linksys router with 2 phone lines). I installed this in april and it works fine for data (so did the prior adapter). however, it did not solve the Voip problem. I got a dial tone and could make a call and receive a call. I could hear the caller on the other end of the line perfectly but they could not hear me other than very occasional garbled syllables. however, I found one thing that helps...I changed the bandwidth setting (it is under the preferences tab on the Vonage screen when you are logged in to your account). I had it set for "best voice" which is high bandwidth and changed it to "normal voice" which is low bandwidth. This made it possible for the person on the other end of the line to understand me completely altho the voice quality suffered from occasional dropped syllables). at least this will make the service useful if it continues to perform this well.
regarding surrounding issues, many in los cabos believe telmex is doing something to degrade Vonage service but I havent talked with anyone who really understands how. obviously it is in telmex's short term interest to do this. the iUSA service was suggested as an alternative but you can only get a mexican phone number...this defeats my purpose for using Voip for voice between the us and mexico. I know you can get virtual numbers from Vonage but only for mexico city at this point in time. that isnt helpful.
I am sure foreign Voip is "illegal" in mexico and therefore Vonage is reluctant to send any email replies to our requests for help...the only way is to get on the phone with them and let them try to diagnose the problem. my guess is that they are doing enough of this to figure out how the service is being degraded and that they might have a good idea how to change router settings to prevent the problem...but I havent had such a call with tech support yet.
anyone who can help us make Vonage better from mexico will be welcome. |
