I discovered that one uTorrent client on my network has a voracious appetite for all bandwidth even though I already have the Vonage V-Portal inserted in the QoS as the one and only 'high' setting.
So what precisely am I buying with QoS and what would I gain by declining uTorrent to a QoS of 'low'?
I am still rummaging to find if there is a way to specifically deny access to ports 27684-27685 on the days and times of my choosing for a single MAC address but so far my Linksys WRT110 doesn't appear to have that level of sophistication. |

I use Utorrent all the time and never have an issue with QOS. I do however use the Linksys WRT54GP2 router/vonage adapter. |

I give the torrent unlimited up and down in utorrent. On the router/adapter I have QOS set to when Vonage is in use don't give all bandwidth to the torrent. |

There are two problems that bittorrent causes: sheer bandwidth usage and number of connections. Each can cause quality problems and they often will appear the same. So when configuring the client, its important to limit the number of connections in addition to limiting bandwidth usage.
That said, Linksys firmware (especially the QoS functionality) is total garbage. If do more than simple web browsing or email, its will likely give you problems. The hardware, on the other hand, is usually quite good. If you pair it up with a third party firmware such as DD-WRT (there are others too) you'll probably get much better performance.
But you have a VDV21 "V-Portal" device. It has a rather good traffic-shaping QoS engine in it. You might want to take a "test drive" with the VDV21 connected directly to your internet modem and the Linksys router connected behind the VDV21. Keep in mind that when you start a call, your connection will seem to slow down on your computer...that's the traffic shaper kicking in. It will automagically adjust (and the connection to your computer speed up) as the call proceeds based your internet connection's availability at the time. |
