Hello,

I have begun getting some strange calls that leave voicemails from individuals with a very thick accent, claiming to be representatives of an attorneys office. They state I missed an important court date and to not ignore this warning to call them back immediately or my family members will regret it and may God have mercy on my soul.

The call is very staticky.

Anyway, the numbers are not normal... I don't have a list of them, but many calls are from: 10000123456 (Someone told me it is probably a Skype number.)

Is there any way or trick to block non-standard numbers or even specific phone numbers? Or somehow make them stop?

There is no way to perform selective call blocking through Vonage at this time. Those numbers are just a randomly spoofed number used by business / telemarketers that do not wish to display a number. Sometimes the numbers are 111111111111 or 0000000000 or even just a single number 1. Cannot prevent it and it is just not Vonage. Every phone company has to face the same thing especially when you get on someones mailing list.

I have some software, Voip Recorder, that is currently in beta. It can block calls based on the caller-id name or number and it works with Vonage.

Check it out at www.penbaynetworks.com

That is kind of what I thought... I did find a Vonage feature to block anonymous calls, but it doesn't work with these strange display numbers.

Thanks

This could be an interesting tool once it matures. I am not one to be a guinea pig with, since it is in beta, things go wrong and I get very flustered. Plus, my phone is on all the time, my computer isn't.

Good luck with it!

That is because Anonymous Call Rejection is based upon the blocking of industry standard of what Anonymous calls are. If you can see a number at all, even if the number is just a single digit such as 1, it is not an anonymous call.

When the call comes in, a query is performed against the number whether is be 1111111111 or 000000000 or 1 or 12125551000 to find a name in the a CNAM database. Since the number does not exist in any record, the name field will be populated with Unavailable, Out of Area, or Unknown. These are no anonymous.

An anonymous call by definition is a call that has Presentation Withheld which means the Presentation parameter in the SS7 signaling is Restricted. This means the caller deliberately blocked their number with *67 or a similar feature.

These calls will not show a number and will display as Anonymous, Private, Private Caller, Restricted, and a few other variations.

Only these types of calls will be blocked by the Anonymous Call Rejection feature.
