PostPosted: Thu May 07, 2009 3:05 pm    Post subject: I can hear caller, they can't hear me-- frustrated! Reply with quote Back to top

So, this started last Friday.

I can hear the person at the other end just fine. But they can't always hear me. About once every 10 minutes I will completely fade out for 10 seconds. I can hear the person at the other end saying "Hello? Hello?" and either I come back in or they hang up on me.

My internet provider is Comcast. I have a RCA Cable Modem. a Linksys device, and a DLink router. The order goes Modem, Linksys, D-Link. I have a phone plugged into the Linksys. Since Friday, after hours of time with Vonage, I have done the following 1. Secured my network (it's secure now) 2. Installed new virus software and run virus screenings (done) 3. Replaced the phone 4. Replaced all ethernet wires (that was comcast's suggestion-- that's done too) 5. Called Comcast and had them look up internet activity for past 10 day--done. I've had no stops in service, and haven't noticed any internet problems at all. 6. Intermittently monitored bandwidth and upload/download speeds-- down, everything is really good.

Here's the results from the speed tests. Maybe these aren't good-- Vonage said they were fine, but I have no clue
Download: 8.97 mb/s
Upload 0.24 MB/s
Ping 27/ms

I changed NOTHING on Friday that would have started this issue. Vonage finally said everything was fine on their end and there was nothing else they could do. I am going to have to quit Vonage after 3 years if I can't get this resolved. Any help would be appreciated

Call into Vonage and if they have done extensive troubleshooting with you on your network ask if you can be upgraded to the vportal (new device from Vonage)

Slyster-- I actually have a vportal for another line (I disconnected it when I started to have issues). So I just changed the config to this:

1. RCA modem=vportal=Dlink wireless router. My phone's hooked up to the vportal.

Can you look at the upload/download speed and tell me what you think?

Download: 8.97 mb/s
Upload 0.24 MB/s
Ping 27/ms

Does this upload time suck? I have two phone lines one fax and regularly use 3 way calling for business meetings (I typically use line at a time)

I had exactly the same problem. The Vonage tech that I spoke with replaced my router with a v-portal and that did not fix the problem. Meanwhile I remembered something that a Comcast tech told me several months ago when he was trying to figure out a broadband outage. (Yes, some Comcast techs DO know something, but not very many!) Open a browser to 192.168.100.1. That is the address of your cable modem. Click on the link to "signal." (I have a Motorola Surfboard modem, but I assume that most modems will have something similar.) Look at your UPSTREAM signal strength. Ideally it should be in the high 30s to the low 40s. Anything over about 45 or 46 indicates a problem. Call Comcast and immediately tell them that you need a tech to come out to check a high upstream signal strength problem. If you have to, be insistent. They will send out a tech who will check your splitters, wiring, street wiring, etc. until they find out where the signal is being lost. In my case it was a 90 degree bend in the cable in the street "cable box" the first time, and the second time there was a section of cable in the same box that had been smashed (probably by some tech not being careful when replacing the cover). Both times, replacing the damaged cable fixed the problem.

Good luck.
