PostPosted: Thu Apr 30, 2009 9:28 pm    Post subject: Integrating into an existing non 192.168.x.x network Reply with quote Back to top

Just got everything in the mail today.

I have been able to get the phone adapter installed and phone calls inbound and outbound. However, my local network cannot go out to the Internet. (I disconnected the Vonage adapter and plugged directly into my Linksys router.

Cable --> Linksys Modem --> V-Portal --> D-Link LAN Switch --> Linksys Router

My network is using the 10.x.x.x range.

I removed my old AT&T CallVantage phone adapter and put the new Vonage V-Portal phone adapter in its place.

Any suggestions or recommendation would be appreciated.

I am going to assume that you're connecting your computer to the Linksys router and cannot access the internet at that point. What was the setup previously with the CallVantage TA?

1. When the Linksys router is connected, can you check if the Linksys router is obtaining an IP address from the V-Portal. If so, what is it? Make sure that the Linksys router isn't configured with a static IP address.

2. If you connect your computer to the D-Link swich that is connected between the V-Portal and the Linksys router, can you access the internet? What about if you connect the computer directly to the V-Portal.

You are partially correct. The computer is connected to the D-Link switch which is connected to the Linksys router.

This is the same exact way everything was setup with the CallVantage TA.

The Linksys router is configured with a static IP address. All devices in my network are static IPs. I have DHCP turned off on my network.

I cannot connect to the Internet. The only time I can connect to the Internet is when I have a laptop directly connected to the LAN port and DHCP is turned on within the V-Portal device.

I have tried changing the LAN IP address but it still is not working.

Ok, if from your diagram, you have the V-Portal connected to the modem and a D-Link switch connected to the V-Portal. The Linksys router is then connected to the D-Link switch. The Linksys router also has a static WAN IP address, presumably in the 10.x.x.x range.

The reason that your computers cannot access the internet is that the CallVantage TA was the gateway out to the internet for your network, and now its address doesn't exist in your network. You will need to do one of the following to rectify this:

1. Change the LAN IP address of the V-Portal to that same one that the CallVantage TA did.

2. Don't change the LAN IP of the V-Portal but do change the WAN IP of the Linksys router to 192.168.15.x OR DHCP client.

I'm also not quite sure why you have the D-Link switch between the V-Portal and the Linksys router. If you keep the setup the way it is now, option 1 is probably the better choice, otherwise you should remove the D-Link switch or will need to change the IP addresses of whatever is connected to the D-Link switch (in addition to the Linksys router) to 192.168.15.x or DHCP cleint.

Thanks for the information. I'll try by flip-flopping the D-Link switch and Linksys Router and see how that works.

I'll update the status this afternoon.

Thanks again!

It's all good now.

This is what I did in total to connect my network through the Vonage TA to Comcast cable service.

1.) Directly connected a laptop to the LAN port on the Vonage V-Portal (Made sure that the laptop Ethernet port was setup for dynamic IP addressing)
2.) Manually added the MAC address registered with Comcast to the Vonage V-Portal
3.) Changed the LAN IP address to the 10.x.x.x network I am using.
4.) Left DHCP enabled, but only assigned a single address not currently being used on my network (for management purposes in case I need to connect a laptop directly to the V-Portal)
5.) Disconnected laptop from the V-Portal LAN port while V-Portal was rebooting after applying changes
6.) Connected Ethernet cable from my cable modem to the WAN port on the V-Portal
7.) Connected Ethernet cable from the LAN port on the V-Portal to a LAN port on my Linksys router
8.) Connected second Ethernet cable from my Linksys router to my D-Link network switch.

Cable modem --> V-Portal --> Linksys router--> D-Link switch

Hope this may help others.
