Post subject: can I choose my own 2nd phone number?
I've had
Vonage
for a while. (ported my number from landline carrier)
Now I want to add a second line.
Vonage
's website asked me to
select the city/state and I do see that my loca area code is avaialbe.
however, it doesn't show the phone number.... do they just
randomly give me a phone number in that area code?

yes they do just "randomly" assign you a phone number. Essentially the number that you get is from a list of available numbers in that area so you get the next one from the list.
some numbers seem "ugly" but after a week or so you just get used to it.

You can definitely select a number but the options will be limited to about 5 numbers.
Go to the
vonage
website and pretend that you are signing up. It will lead you to the part where you will be asked if you want to keep your existing number or you want
vonage
to assign you a new number. Select the latter.
Select your state , area code and city. The last box would display sample available numbers. All 11 digits will show up!
Call customer service and tell them that you want that particular number. The agent will add first a dummy line on the account and then will do a number swap after.
Just pray that at the very same time no one signed up and selected the same number.
