If you just ordered, the reference number isn't in the UPS system yet. I've found it takes a few days to become trackable. In the three shipments I've had from Vonage (too much white noise), all three become trackable about the same time they arrive on my porch.
I wondered about this too when I ordered my adapter. But the reference number they give you on their page is not what you use to track the order. They send you an email, or UPS does, or whatever...that has your order, how much you paid, and the tracking number at the bottom. You click the tracking number, and it takes you to that page. But it takes a few days after you order to get your email. I've found, also, that right when you get the email, the number's active, and you can start giving it out to people. I did that, and a friend left a voicemail on it which I checked online. I get my adapter tomorrow.

Technically, you can track by reference number. You just won't be able to until UPS knows about the shipment, which is usually around the time you get an email from Vonage with a link and your tracking number. At that point, why bother with figuring out how to track via reference number when you can click the 'click here' link to see where your goodies are...
