You can't have your landline and a
Vonage
system connected to the same physical phone wires.
Normally, there is a box on the outside of your house where the phone company's responsibility ends and yours begins. This is the place where there's a customer side and a provider side.
Open your side of the box and disconnect the plug that's there. That will physically disconnect you from your old landline.
If all your phone wires are home runs, you may have a service area where everthing comes together and goes out to the box on your house (demarc) - you could disconnect that as well.
Once you're disconnected, plug your phone adapter in.
