Hi, I have been using Vonage for well over a year now and been very happy with it.
Until I recently moved. I set everything up in my new house and now, when I receive calls my internet connection weakens horribly. For example, on my desktop computer if I am streaming music the music stalls, if I'm connected to network hard drives I lose their connection. My computer is close to the router but during a Vonage call my connection goes from a full five bars to just one or two. I can't even load web pages while someone is on a Vonage line in the home. As soon as the Vonage phone hangs up, everything picks up again.
It reminds me of when I was a kid and my mom would turn on the clothes dryer. All the lights in the house would dim.
My internet connection is fast though, I did a speedtest and my internet speed is an average of 10-20mbps.
Here is my setup:
cable modem -> Vonage router (with one cordless phone attached) -> Apple Time Capsule (with one external hard drive attached)
An iMac and macbook are connected wirelessly to the Time Capsule.
Thanks!! |

I forgot to mention that I am using cable internet with Time/Warner (roadrunner).
I also did the test mentioned in the sticky note in the forum. Here are the results:
Download speed 3575 Kbps (socket test) Upload speed 1857 Kbps (socket test) Quality of service 31 % Maximum delay 369 ms Round trip time 55 ms Upstream jitter 2.4 ms Upstream packet loss 0 % Upstream packet order 100 % Upstream discards 0 % Downstream jitter 2.0 ms Downstream packet loss 0 % Downstream packet order 100 % Downstream discards 0 %
The bizarre thing is that as soon as I finished the Voip test, I went to speedtest.net and it gave me a result of 20000kbps!! It seems that as soon I use Vonage, my download speed plummets. |

This is due to the QoS on the V-Portal (I am assuming this is the device you have). When on an active call, bandwidth is reserved for the phone call and the rest of your trafiic is low priority. Once the call is finished, you will be back to normal. |
