OK, I was having issues with dead spots during calls at multiple random times throughout a call, in 10-15 second intervals where either I could neither say or hear anything, or the caller on the other end could either hear or say nothing. I called Vonage, and I think a rare quality tech support rep actually helped me. He basically told me the ports that the Vonage adapter uses and that I should forward those ports to the box.
Here's the deal...
1. You need to set the ip address of your Vonage box to a static IP. To do this you connect your PC directly to the Vonage box's PC out cat5 connector. Then release and renew the ip of your PC, thus obtaining the same IP as your box. You can then access the box's internal setting by accessing that IP through your browser. Set the ip as static, which will cause your Vonage box to reset itself, you can then reconnect your PC to your router.
2. Now you need to go into your router settings by typing its IP into your browser and forward the following ports to the ip you set in step 1. The ports are UDP5061 and the IP range UDP10000-20000. Then save the settings.
3. Reset all machines in the proper order - modem, router, Vonage box, PC, etc.
Now you should be good. |

You don't necessarily need to set the vonage box to a static IP. What I've done is set the vonage box to use DHCP but my firewall assigns a dhcp static IP to the vonage MAC address. This way if I ever move the vonage box somewhere it will still all be setup to work on virtually any network (except for the port forwards).
I also forwarded more ports:
5060-5061
123
69
53
10000-20000 |
