PostPosted: Sat Mar 14, 2009 11:26 am    Post subject: Connection Dropping with VDV21-VD Reply with quote Back to top

Hello again folks. I got great results from this forum in setting up my alarm system a month ago, so now I am back for another issue I am seeing recently.

I am in Pittsburgh PA and a Comcast subscriber.
I use a VDV21-VD device for my Vonage.

my network is setup as such..

Cable-Modem (Motorola SB5101)
Vonage Device
Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router (with current firmware)
PC's (2)

My internet is basically going down for a couple seconds every hour to 3 hours, it varies.

Comcast states they see no issues with the modem.
I have wireshark on my PC's and I se no issues there, just resending of ack packets because of the connection loss.

the loss is evident to me because it cuts off the phone when I am on a call and also my connections for programs that I work with that require constant connections to an offsite DB.

Any suggestions as far as tests I can do to determine if the Vonage device is the issue? I have Vonage unhooked right now to see if it makes a difference, but when I call tech support I want to be prepared Smile

Thanks in advance!

When connectivity is lost, have you noticed if any of the lights on the cable modem, specifically receive, send, or online, go out?

The cable company asked that as well, and they do not so far as I can tell. The outage is only a second or two so it is hard to catch. But up to this point I have not seen any change in the lights.

What happens when you place the V-Prtoal behind the Linksys. Although the V-Portal has QoS capabilities, if you have it plugged in behind the router and you have no issues, you should leave that setup.

Dependent on which Linksys Router WRT you have, you may want to even apply Tomato or DD_WRT (I think that is what it is) firmware which, according to many members in this forum, dramatically makes the performance of the router better.

I will try that now. I have had the Vonage device unplugged for over 5 hours now and have not had a disconnect issue. So hopefully this works out and I can answer my phone again. Thanks much!

Give DD-WRT a whirl if you can. www.dd-wrt.com I think you'll find the greater control over your connection will prove helpful. Another thing that you can do too is setup a continual ping to www.google.com. Google doesn't block ICMP traffic so you'll get a response. Keep that running on an internal computer. As soon as your phone cuts out, run to that computer and see if the pings stopped during that time frame. It's a poor man's way of seeing if the whole connection is dumping or just your phone connection or the router, etc...

Let us know.
