PostPosted: Fri Mar 13, 2009 6:51 pm    Post subject: Skype - outbound CID for $3/month - why not Vonage? Reply with quote Back to top

I have a $3/month Skype number, and it shows my caller id. Doesn't that really fly in the face of all the 'stock' answers I keep seeing on here? Sounds like someone told you to cut and paste an answer, but there is no context. 'Acceptable' could refer to the number of characters, or a list of proper spellings for standard messages, but when you tell a customer that a given service is deemed 'acceptable', you are implying that they should be satisfied with it. I am with all the others who say they feel misled by Vonage when Vongage does NOT explicitly tell people that they will no longer have out-bound caller ID. I have been used to caller ID for a decade at least.

Can you please tell me how Skype can do it for $3/month, total service costs, and Vonage cannot do it for $25/month? Yes, Skype still has a cost per call, but heck, I am spending < $10/month on Skype total, and I have not found anything useful that Vonage does Skype does not, and outbound caller ID is the big thing I want, and Vonage will not deliver. Yes, I said 'will not' as Skype's ability to provide outbound caller ID from a Voip line for such a cheap price makes all the apologists for Vonage meaningless and without integrity, as it is evidence that Skype can figure it out, but Vonage can't.

What's up with that?

If your reply is to repeat you lack of knowledge, please, just say, 'lack of knowledge', and be done with it, instead of some dribble about 'acceptable standards'. The 'acceptable standards' refers to the spelling, not to customers expectations.

OK - You can ask VonTechMgr.. this is quite possibly my biggest annoyance with Vonage. What it really comes down to is that Vonage doesn't have an outgoing CNAM database and since they don't have a CNAM database other phone companies can't dip into a non existing database to display your number when you call. Hence, the person receiving the call just sees the number because there is no corresponding database to display a name.

Time and time again, I've seen people say this feature is coming. The fact of the matter is that two different Vonage employees have told me flat out that the idea was at one time on the table to create a CNAM database but has since been scrapped. It is unknown if it will ever be created.

So... long and short... it just isn't a feature of Vonage. If you want outgoing CNAM, you need to find a different provider. For me, it is an annoyance, but the other features of Vonage outweigh the annoyance.

Yeah, wish Vonage would finally get moving on this (Outbound caller ID.)

I think Skype is an OK service, and with the ATA's for Skype, much better since they can not use your computer as a Super Node (starting with version 3.?, you could change the registry to NOT make your machine a supernode for the Skype network.)

BTW, when is Skype going to support 911 or E911. Without that, it is a good 2nd phone, but not much of a primary line.

Yes it has been heard plenty of times and hard to believe when it is mentioned that it is in the works. I do know that the new CEO (former ATT) is surprised this isn't available either and is making it top on his list in terms of features (yes not a feature, a must for someone who would eventually post that). The only question is where are the features placed on this prirotiy list but only time will tell.

Hi, It is kind of off topic but I just give up on Vonage after many attempts to make my call waiting to work. I have been through many unplugging and network rebooting but that is all that Vonage customer support can offer. It just does not work.

What is the problem with your call waiting?

When talking to someone and another call comes in all I can hear is one beep and no caller id. I tested myself many times.

You'd probably be best assisted by posting the information in the "What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage...." sticky as its own topic as this one isn't the same as what you're seeing.

Low bandwidth will affect call waiting. Change your bandwidth saver to the lowest usage.

That would be correct for 3-way calls but for a call waiting call, audio is not sent or received for the call that is on hold so the bandwidth used is still the same as 1 call.
