Using a ATA-186, with Comcast modem.
If no outgoing calls for say, 10 mins or more. The next outgoing call either results in a fast busy signal, the modem resets, or both will happen. In this words, the fast busy, next try, modem reset.
The next try and the call will connect.
This does not occur, to my knowledge, for incoming calls.
Ideas for reason? |

Can't give you any type of detailed reason without obtaining more data. You wouldn't also happen to have Comcast Digital Voice would you? Meaning your cable modem has a built in telephone adapter. All I can tell you is the fast busy is generated by the Cisco ATA. This is an indication that it attempted to place a call and either:
A) The ATA never generated an Invite out from itself therefore it's interdigit timer expired and played fast busy
B) The ATA generated an Invite but the Invite never makes it to the proxy therefore ATA times out and generates a fast busy.
C) You lost Registration to the proxy but some how the ATA is still playing a dial tone. Upon sending the Invite to the Proxy, you get a 404 not Found because you no longer a registered user to that proxy and therefore the ATA will play a fast busy.
If your modem is losing connectivity during this time frame or rebooting itself, any of the above are possible. There is just no way for me to know the cause of what is happening to your modem. The only reason I asked about the modem being a telephone adapter for Comcast is because I thought you might have some sort of Voltage issue if you were somehow using Vonage and Comcast Digital Voice and both tied into home wiring, a splitter, or a multi-line phone somehow. This might somehow put unwelcome Voltage into the modem's voice module causing it to reboot. |

No Comcast Digital. Only have Comcast internet. Since it seems from your post that there is a possibility of an "invite" issue. Should I replace the ATA with a newer model. |

You could but that wont solve the issue of your modem rebooting at around the same time. If your modem is rebooting, the Cisco ATA cannot make that happen. Something else is causing it. While it wont hurt to get a new telephone adapter, if the root cause of your issue is elsewhere, the new adapter will not resolve the problem.
You also only mentioned you have a modem and a Cisco ATA. I have to assume you use the internet and do not just have Comcast to use Vonage. Since the Cisco ATA 186 does not have any routing function, I have to assume you also have a router that was never mentioned. A router can easily act up and prevent Invites from going out or from receiving responses.
If there is a router, I would start with a factory reset and take it from there. |

Shall try that, but now you have been wondering. The router could not be causing the modem to reset. Humm |
