I have just acquired an account and phone number with Vonage and am now connecting the hardware.
I am sharing my internet connection with my landlord who lives in a separate section of the house. Therefore I am using a Linksys wireless-g USB network adapter to receive the internet connection.
Can my Vonage D-Link adapter work straight from the ethernet port directly out of the computer or do I need to hook it up to the modem?
Thanks,
D |

You can use Internet Connection Sharing on the PC to connect your Vonage device to the internet. Windows ICS can be a little wonky though. And you need to keep the computer on all the time (or at least when you want to use the phone).
For a more permanent you might want to obtain a wireless bridge. Linksys makes a pretty good one that is sold as an adapter to connect a game console wirelessly, the WGA600N. The nice thing about the WGA600N is that its wireless-N and it has both 2.4 and 5ghz radios. But that might be a little more than what you need. Basicly, any wireless router that can run the DD-WRT 3rd party firmware can be turned into a wireless bridge. You can get several different DD-WRT-compatable ones for pretty cheap now-a-days. |

Even if you get this working using Internet Connection Sharing, it would not be recommended. You can run into many problems.
1) Audio issues since there is no QOS and any time your landlord uses the internet, it could affect your voice quality.
2) Wireless interference which could cause service and quality issues.
3) Absolutely no support. Vonage cannot support you if you were to report issues and you don't have access or control over the modem and router feeding your connection or if your your PC is causing a service issue due to the Internet Connection Sharing, software firewall, or virus on the PC. |
