I used to demo units like this when the tech was first coming into widepread usage, they can definately be touchy.
As a few others have mentioned, GFCI and surge protectors can definately cause trouble, as well as some breaker branches, depending on how they're configured. The other thing to check is if the circuit has an outlet with a GFI device. Most bathrooms and the like do, but if they were wired as part of a bigger circuit, that can be a problem. In my house for example, the outside outlets are on the same circuit as my bathrooms (go figure), so the first time I had Christmas lights up and we got a heavy rainstorm, it tripped the GFI outlet in one of my bathrooms. Took me forever to figure that one out. |

Not sure what GFCI is or GFI device, but I made sure not to plug into any surge protectors or the like. Straight into the outlet.
Just not sure why it seems to read a signal until I actually want to use it! it's like it's alive and teasing me... |

That last part makes me think the circuit is not your problem, but there's a small chance it could be.
Basically GFI/GFCI = Ground Fault Interrupter or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. If you have any, they'd most likely be in the bathroom or kitchen. It'll be an outlet with the Test and Reset buttons. If you have any outlets like that, there's a chance they might be the problem. The best way to test would be to make sure the outlet your using isn't on the same circuit as the GFI outlet. Hit the test button so the Reset button pops out. At that point the outlet should be dead. Any other outlets in the house that are also dead are on the same circuit.
I should put a disclaimer here that I am by no means an electician or electrical expert. I'm only going on what I've dealt with in the past when working with these devices and/or GFI outlets. If you're not sure about what you're doing, check with a pro; unless you're in the market for a new spike look hairdo. |
