PostPosted: Thu Feb 19, 2009 10:05 am    Post subject: need help with RT31P2 and the WRTG54G set up Reply with quote Back to top

Vonage helped me set up my routers had the wireless before Vonage. Vonage and wireless router worked fine before I unpacked and connected desktop. So called Vonage and they walked me through the set up. Modem-RT31P2-WRTG54G Vonage works great, connect laptops to internet works great, the issue I am running into is that I cannot see the laptops and desktops that are connected to our network. We need to be able to print to the printer etc...

Can someone respond and maybe explain what I need to do?

Thanks
Stephanie

All your PC's have to be on the same Local Area Network. If you have a PC behind one router and a PC behind another router, they do not see each other since they are both separated by a layer 3 device. This is not related to Vonage. This is basic network principles and would occur if you had any 2 routers in use.

If the issue is you do not have enough ports on the WRT54G to connect all the PC's to it, you will need to purchase a switch. A 5 port switch is inexpensive and will do exactly what you need. Just connect it to one of the ports on your WRT54G and then you can connect all your PC's to the ports on the WRT54G and the switch. If you plan to expand your Local Area Network, purchase an 8 Port switch instead. Just make sure all the PC's are connected behind the WRT54G and no PC's are connected to the RT31P2 and your issue will be resolved.

An alternative to purchasing a switch would be to configure static routes in both the routers but this requires a higher level of networking knowledge and may be difficult to walk you though via messaging. I do not suggest this unless you are very technical and have a good understanding of basic networking since that is the root cause of your problem to begin with. My recommendation would be to get a switch to simplify things.

The only thing plugged into the wireless router is the ethernet from the Vonage router. So are you saying that the laptops are using the wireless and then the desktop is using the Vonage router?

Can I plug the desktop into the wireless router? or do they have to be plugged into the Vonage router since that is the first router?

I can figure most things out but this stupid Vonage thing is driving me nuts....LOL

Thanks for any help!

Since the wireless clients(the laptops) use the DHCP server form the WRT54G, in order for your desktops to be on the same Local Area Network, they must all be connected to the WRT54G. So if your PC's are connected to the RT31P2, this would be incorrect.

In order for the hard wired PC's and Laptops to be able to talk to each other, the hard wired PC's need to be connected to the Ethernet ports on the WRT54G.

So your set up should just be:

Modem -> WAN / Internet Port on Rt31P2
Port 1 on RT31P2 -> WAN / Internet Port on WRT54G
Ports 1 - 4 on WRT54G -> All your hard wired PC's

And this is not a Vonage thing at all. Vonage is on the telephone service. It is a voice module built into a router. Your issue is just that your connecting PC's to router number 1 which is on one subnet. Then you have your laptops connecting wirelessly to router 2 which is on another subnet. Two subnets cannot talk to each other unless static routes are configured. So if your had any store bought router and connected PC's to it, then plugged in your WRT54G to this other router, you would have the same problem.

Conclusion: Your fix is very simple. Just plug all your PC's into the WRT54G. Nothing to configure, nothing to purchase. Just make sure all your PC's are set for DHCP so that they will obtain a new IP from the WRT54G.
