Post subject: Using V-Portal to Extend Network w/other Router as DHCP Srvr
I currently have a cable modem to a 4-port Linksys router. My V-Portal device is plugged into the 4th port and all are now full. I would like to plug one more device into my LAN and tried plugging it into the V-Portal.
If I have DHCP enabled, the V-Portal gives it an IP address of 192.168.15.2, however it is not connected to the rest of the LAN.
Can the V-Portal be configured as a switch/hub so that the DHCP server of the router administers the IP address of this last device so that it can be on my local lan?
I tried the following settings which don't seem to work:
Primary Router
ip address 192.168.1.1
subnet 255.255.255.0
DHCP enabled for 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.149
V-Portal
ip address 192.168.1.2 (static)
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1
dns 192.168.1.1
DHCP disabled
QoS disabled
Firewall disabled
Remote management enabled
Would another option be for me to set the V-Portal up as a DHCP server so that it administers IP addresses from 192.168.1.150 - 192.168.1.160? Would that make the devices on the same LAN? Would I have a conflict somehow if I did that?
Thanks for your help,
- Eric

The VDV1 does not do DHCP relay or static routing so there would be no way for the PC connected behind the VDV21 to be on the same LAN as or even be reached from PC's connected to port 1 - 3 on your router. To expand your LAN, your going to have to purchase a 5 port switch.

What you could do is plug the v-portal directly to the internet connection and plug the router into the v-portal. This would free up your 4th port on the other router/switch.

First reset your V-portal to default (based on your post)
Expand your Home network this way--Cable modem - v-portal - Router. unplug the cable modem- Power off the Vportal- Shutdown your PC's.
Power OFF everything CM-VP-Router-PC's
from the Vportal (blue) patch cord to Cable modem
From Vportal (yelllow) Patch cord to Router (internet)
Connect- patch cords to port1-3 that will leave port 4 Spare-
Power only the cable modem (wait) for it 30 Seconds at least.
Power the Vportal (Wait) for the phone symbol -Check for DT
Power your router - (wait) or go power on one device (PC) when the PC is ready go to google and do a search- or get a dos prompt and do IPconfig /all and then you are ready to expand.
get a Five port hub-Plug a patch cord from port 4 of the router to port 6 of the hub and power the hub up.
You now increase your network by 5 more devices.
Do it that way your lynks router assigns DCHP to your local network.
