Any help here would be appreciated. I rent an office in a building where I get free internet service from another companies network. I want to know if it is possible to connect a Vonage v-port for phone service. I know they are using cisco routers for their network and I have tested my internet connection and get 1.5Mbps up and 3.5Mbps down. Obviously I will not be able to connect the v-port directly to the internet connection, it will have to be connected to the cisco switch/router they are using. Will I be able to get phone service this way and are there ports I would need to get the network admin to forward or any other settings?

Thanx in advance.

Chuck,

Take a look at Vonage's support article here: http://www.vonage.com/support.php?article=1098

It tells you what you'll need outgoing as well as what you'll need incoming.

It should work fine if you set the ATA with a static address and your admin of your location creates an ACL for Vonage on their firewall pointing towards that static IP.

It all depends on the company's IT policy... I'm pretty shocked their letting a tenant use their internet pipe, but hey if their cool with it that works for me.

Thanks ksig. The owner of my company also knows the owner of the building and that's the only reason why they're giving us the free internet connection through their network. Tomorrow their network guy is gonna open the ports up that the link you gave me said to. I picked up the VDV-21 V-Portal today so hopefully everything goes ok tomorrow.

Thanks again.
Chuck

Just keep in mind your going to be using a shared internet connection. This means that while you will get dial tone and will be able to place and receive phone calls, there is no guarantee your call quality we always be good. Any heavy network traffic on the LAN will degrade your overall voice quality unless the Network Admin has a way of prioritizing the voice traffic to and from your VDV21 on the LAN.

Well the network admin was willing to open a few ports for me but when i showed him the list from that link that said ports 10000-20000 needed to be opened he said no way he could open up 10000 ports in the firewall. So that ended that route and I needed to go get a cable modem for an extra $50 a month. Everything is up now on my own internet connection. Thanx for the help you guys provided though.

That's better for you in the long run. You can control what is occurring on your bandwidth.
