Yeah, I know what you mean about the user experience. I have resisted using captchas on the sites I run, I just check the originating URL to see if it is my form from my sites and not a script using http post and also parse data from certain fields to verify the data as one would expect (such as a telephone number, etc). I still get just a little so am thiking about using captchas.
In your case, forums are so much more free form, it is difficult to do and I think your site is a much bigger target for their spam.

The graphic porn spam the other day was the worse one I have seen on here, most of them are people trying to cell phones and numbers, but with a few moderators on here those would get deleted as soon as they get posted. With the new measures for new members maybe the spam will come down to a trickle.

It didn't help much. There was some more porn spam in one of the other subject areas and some advertising spam right next to it.
