PostPosted: Wed Feb 11, 2009 11:26 pm    Post subject: Caller ID Differences? Reply with quote Back to top

Did anyone notice caller ID acting different than normal today? For example, I received a call from a verizon cell phone that generally displays "BOURBONNAIS IL" and then the number. Today when they called it said "Cell Phone IL" in mixed case. Generally speaking the caller ID is all upper case so I was surprised to see the mixed case. Also later, I received a call that said Smith, K on the caller id along with the phone number. However this person calls me regularly and sure enough, in the previous call log it shows SMITH KAREN. So it seems to me like either Vonage has changed the company they are performing look ups against or something has been changed. Is anyone seeing a difference or am I off on my own island here?

Thanks!

ksig,

You are correct. Vonage has switched CNAM providers as of 8AM EST yesterday(2/11/09). So you may notice many differences in the caller ID presentation you see since each CNAM provider has different data stored and presents it a different way.

Eh, who knows. The listings of the people that call you might be the same in both the old and new database provider. Something you can do is go to www.fixcallerid.com and run the test against your number to see how it shows up on different CNAM databases.

I did this when VonTechMgr and I were discussing how when I call someone, some of my friends and family were still seeing my name on outbound calls even though I have Vonage. Prior to me having Vonage I had AT&T with outbound caller id displaying my name. Apparently that is still stuck in a few systems and Comcast Digital Voice happens to be one. Anytime I call comcast people my name still shows up and this was reported on the fixcallerid.com report.

Mind you, they can't add your name to anything if you're a Vonage customer since Vonage doesn't have a CNAM database... yet. Hopefully someday that will change. Wink

Yes very true.

I hope in my original reply that I wasn't coming across as saying nothing had happened. I was hoping that my intention of saying that I had nothing on my end was clear. Nice to have VonTechMgr participate and let us know what's going on.

I know much has been said about outgoing Caller ID. Seems to be some very strong opinions on some wanting it added. Truthfully, it really doesn't matter too much to me. If someone doesn't recognize my number, and doesn't answer, I've felt so what. I'll leave a message and then they can have the hassle of catching me. I've just never felt that it was that big a deal. With my account history, I can easily tell people exactly when I called, and I can hassle them as to it being their choice not to answer.

Now smartring. There's a feature I want.

It's not that big of a change... just a lot of mixed case displays and mostly Lastname Firstname. I could care less as long as it works.
