Any help on incoherent audio would be much appreciated. My wife works from home and can not use our phone.

1. Indianapolis
2. Comcast
3. Down/up
4. Modem - Motorola SB-5100
5. Adaptor-VDV21-VD
6. Setup Modem-->Router (DIR-655) -->Adaptor
7. Very choppy audio

You did not tell us if you are a new Vonage customer and or if you have had good service, but this just started happening.

If this has just started happening, there could be various answers, the SB-5100 has gone bad, the router has gone bad or the adapter has gone bad.

Take everything out between the computer and the SB 5100 and re test. Then add each piece back and see if three are any changes.

There has been a number of complaints on this board recently due to Comcast's new policy of managing bandwidth. (look at recent posts regarding QOS, etc.)

One Vonage customer was able to get Comcast to fix his problem, see http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic23747.html That is not to say your problem is Comcast's issue, so read them all. The reference post is jitter, yours seems to be pause.

Been with Vonage since July 2008 and allways had choppy audio. Just thought that was the technology, i.e., Voip vs analog, so we've just been dealing with the issues until our contract renews.

1) The DIR-655 also does Stateful Packet Inspection. Have you ever disabled the firewall completely and tested your audio when it wasn't inspecting each packet passing through the router?

2) Are you using phones that operate at 2.4ghz? If so, have you disabled the wireless portion of the router so that it does not interfere with the phones and tested phone calls?

3) Have you also tested the VDV21 without any other PC's or network devices connected to the router(meaning unplug network cables to things other then the VDV21)? This will rule out anything on your LAN that might be utilizing bandwidth without your knowledge.

4) Have you ever tested the VdV21 directly to your modem?

These are all the simple quick hitters to check before going more into depth. They are listed in order of things to try. If you do one at a time and test some phone calls upon each step being completed, it can help you identify the root cause.

Nope, choppy audio is not part of the technology, Vonage for me has been rock solid.

I also use Grand Central (now no more sign-ups now under evaluation, guess Google is trying to figure out how to make money on it), which is Voip and works fine.

I also use Free World Dial up through my PC, in some cases to connect Grand Central when I am on the road (Grand Central rings my office POTS line, My Cell Phone and My FWD VOIP), which is also clear and not choppy, understand in this case it is Voip to POTS to Voip.

If you have choppy audio, probably an ISP or networking issue. I would suggest you try and resolve, as Vonage with its no cost features is the best bang for the buck out there.

02/17/09 - 8:35pm test right after broken conversation.

Well spent two months with Vonage tech support and Comcast and finally my ISP resolved the problem in there network for a week or so - I am changing ISP and hope this resolves the issue else Vonage will have to go after three years and I will return to POT system.

tv, your delay appears to be the problem. Have you taken everything out between the computer and the cable modem and re tested?
