I currently have an RTP300, which seems to have a max of 8000kbps rating on it....
I'm looking for a Vonage router that will support 15mb/sec downstream...
Any recommendations? |

I believe the RTP300 WAN's port is limited to 10Mbps. The new device, V-Portal, which is the default Vonage ships nowadays, has an autosensing 10/100 WAN port so this should cover your needs.
Otherwise, you can always purchase a third party router and plug your RTP300 behind that router. I would say all router nowadays support 100Mbps (the gig versions are there as well). |

Does Vonage give you a break if you want to replace the RTP300? I have one also but I have it behind a router. Are there any disadvantages to the RTP300? |

If you want to support that type of speed, buy a separate router.
If you are somewhat tech-savvy I would suggest a router that supports aftermarket firmware like Tomato or DD-WRT.
The Vonage devices are good phone devices, but poor routers so if you want performance, put the Vonage device behind a primary router so that it only deals with the phone traffic.
I use a WRT54GL which supports both DD-WRT and Tomato and would not have it any other way since I have good control over my QoS with the aftermarket firmware.

I concur. I'm using the Linksys WRT54GL here with a D-Link VTA-VR. No problem with 15/2 Optimum Online cable service. Also used it while I was running Optimum Boost 30/5 and getting in excess of 27Mbps on the downstream on both the wired and wireless. Make sure you get the WRT54GL.
