PostPosted: Wed Jan 21, 2009 2:25 pm    Post subject: Audio dropping out -- please help Reply with quote Back to top

I've had the same setup for over 2+ years with no problems with sound quality on my Vonage/FIOS setup. Last week the audio started dropping out for a split second and then got progressively worse.

If I reset the V-Portal - the sound quality would be great. Any calls made within about an hour of the reset were fine. But after about an hour the audio dropouts would happen. And it seemed that the audio drop out duration would get longer the longer the V-Portal was on.

My original setup:
Fios ONT -> DI-624 ->V-Portal, then I had other computers connected to the other ports of the DI-624.

I've worked with Vonage over the weekend, spent about 8 hours with various 'fixes' and nothing worked. We replaced all the cables, tried a new V-Portal, etc. Still the same issue, after about an hour the audio would start to drop out.

Last night the 'advance' tech had me configure the V-Portal to be directly connected to the Fios ONT (via PPPoE like the DI-624).

Now the audio quality has been great for about 8 hours ---- BUT my internet speed maxs out at 7Mbps (or MBps can't remember) -- but I'm paying for 20M up / 5M down.

Read a few threads on here and it seems you guys (and gals) are much more knowledgeable ---- so looking for ideas.

After reading one post I'm going to try and hook the V-Portal back up to the DI-624 with nothing else connect and test, then slowly add back computers.

On a side not, maybe just a coincidence - but this all started after I installed BackBlaze to backup my main computer -- it was sending a chuck of data up to their servers. I thought this may be the issue so turned off that computer totally and reset the V-Portal -- but the audio drops came back. I did have Verizon reset the ONT and they said all their tests came back as ok and the account wasn't 'limited' because of the increased traffic from BackBlaze. I've since uninstalled BackBlaze and ensured all the processes were no longer active/running.

Thanks!

Are you running torrents on any of the computers?

What speeds do you get with a computer connected directly into the FIOS? I'd also run and post the results from the sticky in the forum head. I suspect that it's actually 20M down /5 up, and if so 7M down stinks for that type of connection.

Before I placed the V-Portal between the ONT and the DI-624, I'd see 18.9 down and 4.6 up, now with the V-Portal its about 6-7 down and still 4.6 up.

I've had this setup for about a day with zero dropped audio --- so at least I know its 'fixable' -- so looking for any suggestions. Will try to figure out which device if any is causing the issue this weekend by hooking up just Vonage and then adding computers, etc one by one.

Here is the current setup Voip test (ONT->VPortal->DI-624)
Speed test statistics

Download speed: 6358624 bps
Upload speed: 4663712 bps

I just tried something -- and it worked. Yesterday when on the phone with the Vonage tech as he walked me throught setting the V-Portal to PPPoE --- I noticed that even with the DI-624 still set for PPPoE that I had internet connectivity through it.

So I just turned on PPPoE on the DI-624 -- and guess what, it got a second IP address from Verizon, different than the one the V-Portal has --- and now my results are:

Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 17346872 bps
Upload speed: 4664048 bps
Quality of service: 92 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 97 ms
Average download pause: 2 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 51 ms
Average round trip time to server: 94 ms

Voip test statistics
--------------------
Jitter: you --> server: 0.1 ms
Jitter: server --> you: 0.5 ms
Packet loss: you --> server: 0.0 %
Packet loss: server --> you: 0.0 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 79
Estimated MOS score: 4.4

Of course I haven't made any phone calls to see if the audio drops still occur --- so we'll see. I do notice my download speed is only 17.3 down when its normally 18.9 down so maybe the V-Portal is getting a little piece of the bandwidth from the ONT.

Any down side to two PPPoE devices (with different IPs and different LAN side addresses?)

Did another test --- while on the phone I ran the Voip test and got these results:

Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 6995528 bps
Upload speed: 4625536 bps
Quality of service: 99 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 94 ms
Average download pause: 4 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 47 ms
Average round trip time to server: 87 ms

Voip test statistics
--------------------
Jitter: you --> server: 0.0 ms
Jitter: server --> you: 0.4 ms
Packet loss: you --> server: 0.0 %
Packet loss: server --> you: 0.0 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 78
Estimated MOS score: 4.4

So looks like the V-portal throttle down the internet connection during the call. But call quality was excellent.

After the call - the internet speed returned to 17 down. So looks like I may have a solution ---- although I never had an issue before, so something has changed -- but I can live with this now as long as the two PPPoE devices work together without issues --- so we'll see.

(I am not at home now so I can't post my stats, but they are just fine when in my original config).

Do you have FiOS TV as well. I connected as you suggested and when I was running Video On Demand and made a phone call VOD came to a screeching halt.

FiOS steps up the bandwidth when you do VOD specifically for the VOD. I think whatever does this doesn't happen when my DLink Router is connected through a V-Portal.

This is a GRRRR... thing.

I have FIOS TV but haven't checked the VOD while making a call.

Not sure why this would matter since the STB and the little black box for VOD is all on coax and doesn't go through the ethernet. I'd hope that at the ONT there is dedicated bandwidth for the coax side and the ethernet side. But will test and let you know.

First... my stats...

Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 4857344 bps
Upload speed: 1848520 bps
Quality of service: 99 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 48 ms
Average download pause: 2 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 43 ms
Average round trip time to server: 111 ms

Voip test statistics
--------------------
Jitter: you --> server: 0.4 ms
Jitter: server --> you: 3.5 ms
Packet loss: you --> server: 0.0 %
Packet loss: server --> you: 0.0 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 31
Estimated MOS score: 4.1

Next... My NIM-100 is connected to the STBs via the coax connection, but to VOD, widget data, and guide information via an ethernet port on my DLink router.

If I disconnect the NIM-100, Vonage works fine, but I can't get VOD and don't download guide info. If I connect NIM-100, get VOD, Vonage choppy.

Went around and around with both Vonage and Verizon (drained two cell phone batteries). No resolution yet. Verizon is sending out a new router (replaces NIM and DLink). I will post if that makes a difference.

Thanks,
Dan
