PostPosted: Tue Jan 13, 2009 6:19 pm    Post subject: Models of 802.11 G phones that work with Vonage? Reply with quote Back to top

Greetings,

Although I'm not thrilled about the 20% price increase to my bill, so long as it's still the cheapest option with good service I'm willing to stick with it. My contract is up soon and I remembered that when I first signed up there was an option for an 802.11 wireless device. Returning to the Vonage page I can no longer find it listed as a "product".

I was wondering if anyone here knew of any models of 802.11 hand held client devices that would work with Vonage since a quick search on the forums didn't yield any recent results for me....perhaps I used the wrong search terms.

I have a few freebies at work from testing Voip integration into our TDM switch and I was considering using one of them, but they're all a couple years old and I believe they're 802.11 b. I'm interested in checking out an 802.11 g device as I try to keep my devices as homogeneous as possible and would like to avoid mixing a b device into a g network, especially for something like a phone that would be a constant on device.

Any help you good folk would be willing to provide would be appreciated. I've still got a month left to figure out what device and service I'm going to go with, so I'm willing to do my own research, I'm just hoping for a nudge in the right direction to kick things off.

Thanks in advance!

Will

BTW - A device that could use two gateways at once for separate numbers/services (so I can use it at work and have just 1 phone) would be ideal, although I haven't been able to find one. If you have any knowledge on where to find something like that It'd be a greatly appreciated bonus!

Your looking for a Wifi SIP Phone. Vonage no longer offers this product as the need for it was very minimal. Until cities are full of open wireless access points to roam from, this type of item is really only geared towards those who need to have the latest gadgets and gizmos. Not the mainstream consumer market.

With that said, you would need to purchase 2 things. A open model Wifi SIP phone and a Vonage softphone line. An open version Wifi SIP phone will allow you to configure it with any SIP providers information needed to authenticate and Register the line. The softphone line from Vonage is needed because it is the only line Vonage will release your SIP password. You cannot get this if you only have a standard Residential line attached to an actual Vonage telephone adapter or V-Phone. In place of the Wifi SIP phone, you could always get a Wifi enabled cell phone that you can get a SIP client application for. This way you can use the SIP client over Wifi. Note that not all cell phone have the ability to use these apps over 3G or Edge networks as for whatever reason was only designed to use the Wifi interface.

Also note, that all of which I just spoke of it not in any way supported by Vonage so it is setup and use at your own risk. You will need to configure it yourself without any help from Vonage and any issues that occur need to be troubleshot and resolved by you.

Examples of a Wifi SIP phones:(there are many others, this is 2 of them - these are NOT cell phones)

Idea What would really be nice is if someone would go to sourceforge, download the source code for Vonage Talk and recompile it for Windows Mobile. I looked at it, but I am not a C programmer and you need the registered professional version of Visual Developer to compile for Windows Mobile.

Any takers? Cool

Excellent, thanks guys! Good info.

And I too would love a windows mobile version...The folks upstairs recently decided that windows mobile devices are the only ones to be supported at work...no more blackberries or IPhones. It'd be great if I could use my PDA like that.

Or if your Cell phone company has windows mobile phones and do not deactivate (lock) SIP, even better!
