Well that headline is kind of misleading. I can't get a dynamic IP on my main computer. I begrudgingly called Vonage and their solution was to set me up with the static IP of 192.168.15.2. But My laptop, xbox360, and iphone all have no problems at all getting on the network. Home come my main PC here is the only thing that can't get a dynamic IP address. |

Did you check the settings for your network adapter in your computer? |

Has the power cycled on your router recently? You could have a messy arp table that needs refreshed. You could be trying to obtain an IP that is already in use. If your router allows you to setup reservations by mac, try setting a reservation for a high IP above the DHCP scope and see if that works. |

I think tglea was talking about the possibility that your adapter does not have DHCP enabled, etc.
You also could have a corrupted TCPIP stack, see http://support.microsoft.com/?id=299357 and http://support.microsoft.com/?id=811259 |

You also did not mention what operating system your desktop is running. Is this a Vista machine? Is the laptop an XP machine? From issues I have seen similar to what you experience, it is usually always with Vista .
This has to do with the DHCP discovery packet has the Broadcast flag enabled in Vista and disabled in XP. Some routers and even ISP DHCP servers, internal company DHCP servers or actually many non Microsoft DHCP servers in general will not process the DHCP Discovery packet due to the Broadcast flag set to enabled. Therefore you wont get an IP address via DHCP.
If it is Vista, read this.

The fix is here.

I am running vista VonTechMgr and I edited my registry like it said in the link and that didn't work. I have DHCP service running as well, so it isn't that. |

Did you reboot your PC after you modified the registry?
Are you running Vista 32 or 64 bit? Most of these registry fixes are for 32 bit only as the 64 bit registry is slightly different. |
