wrt54gl configuration:
From the PC/Mac determine the default gateway address (ipconfig, from the command prompt on a wintel box; ifconfig, from terminal on a Macintosh) Use the ip address of the default gateway in the address bar of your browser to enter the configuration interface of the wrt54gl. (by default it is 192.168.1.1 and admin, admin for user name , password) Determine the current DHCP pool. It will be part or all of the private class c subnet of 192.168.1.0/24 usable address are : 192.168.1.2-.192.168.1.254) Determine what address you will use for the static address on the VT2442 and set it as the DMZ (allow all.) The address you choose should be outside of the DHCP pool or very high in the pool to avoid an addres conflict in you LAN ip addressing.
Also note the DNS address as you will need them in the next step.

vt2442 configuration:
You will need an Ethernet segment from the PC/Mac NIC to a LAN interface on the vt2442. Refresh DHCP on the PC/Mac (or restart.) In your browser enter 192.168.15.1 in the address /location bar and press the enter key on the keyboard. You'll be presented with authentication. The user name should be populated and the password is the same as the existing user name (unless you've changed it) and a configuration interface is presented. Change the connection type from DHCP to Static.
Enter the IP address that you have set as static on the wrt54gl along with the subnet mask (most likely 24 bit 255.25.255.255.0) of the default gateway (the LAN side ip address of the wrt54gl) as well as the DNS address from the wrt54gl (determined by your ISP (internet service provider) if a DNS pass through option exists use that option and the DNS address will be obtained automatically and will update if the ISP changes the DNS server addresses (Comcast does this) and accept using the submit button (might be labeled as ok or go..)
Reboot the network far side in (turn the wrt54gl and the vt2442 off, then turn the wrt54gl on and after 90 seconds turn the vt2442 on)

I hope this is understandable.

Not to be a total goof, but what will these settings do? Is it to give the data from the Vonage device and easier road to travel?

It will keep the router at the edge (Linksys wrt54gl ) from delaying packets to and from the DMZ.

The UL and DL speeds are missing for the CM>>TA>>PC test
By Current setup do you mean CM>>PC?
Also are you using the same Ethernet cable between the CM and the next network component?

Current setup is modem -> linksys -> desktop & Vonage device

For the Vonage only I went modem -> Vonage ->laptop

The cable from the modem to whatever device (linksys or Vonage) stayed the same. The cable from the device to the computer or laptop were the same brand (part of a two pack) and length.

The speeds for the first Vonage only test were close differing by less than 10%. The last test had speeds that were about the same.

Did you configure the DMZ and make a call to test the far end audio degradation?

Outerfire, Tambuyser, VonTechMgr, & Steve48 thank you for your time and input with my problem.

Kmann thanks for your help!! I followed your suggestion, set up the DMZ, and tried it out tonight. I had utorrent running and made some calls. No one mentioned any choppy speech. In fact, most folks said I was more clear now than ever.

Thanks again everyone!

You're welcome. I run into that problem a lot. You could also set up port forwarding (10000-20000) to achieve an alternate configuration to correct far end audio. Either way verify that you've configured the WAN port ip address of the dmz server (in this case the telephone adapter) as static and that the address is either very high in the dhcp pool or out of the scope of the pool.
