Post subject: WRT54GS wireless router problem
I have had a cable modem from Time Warner installed with a Linksys RT31P2
Vonage
router for several years. I'd like to add a WRT54GS wireless router on top of the
Vonage
router.
First I tried the "fast install" CD instructions. That didn't work. Then I tried to install the wireless router by itself and that doesn't even work. Is there a setting that I'm missing?
I want wireless in my house, but this is a bigger hassle than I'd bargained for.

hey,
is your wireless router connected like this?
cable modem to linksys
Vonage
router to wireless router to computers?
if not then set it up like in the following way.
connect the ethernet cable from cable modem to internet port in the
Vonage
router.
connect the ethernet cable from the Lan port of
Vonage
router to internet port of the wireless router.
power off all the devices and then power it up in this sequence.
1 the cable modem.
2 the
Vonage
router.
3 the wireless router
4 the computer.
Try this out and let me know how this works.

It worked! Thanks!
Now how do I configure the router? I'd like to add password protection to our network.

Personally, I'd use a slightly different configuration but alas I think you are better of going with what is working.
You need to log into the router prob something like
http://192.168.1.1
and there is a tab for wireless. Here's where you need to educate yourself a little bit as there will be several options for layered password protection. You'll need to take into account the computers that will be connecting wirelessly and how secure you want to be.
We can point you this direction if you are ready for some frustration figuring us out.
