PostPosted: Thu Jan 01, 2009 2:34 pm    Post subject: One B'band Jack From Cable Modem but need Three Phone Lines Reply with quote Back to top

I am going to three phone lines but only have one broadband jack coming out of my cable modem. Is it possible to "daisy chain" another Vonage router from one of the LAN ports of my existing Vonage router or do I need to find some way to split the single broadband jack from my cable modem into two? And, if that is the case, any suggestions on how to do it? Thanks in advance for your help!

You could daisy chain them but you'd probably find it easier to get a good router and use that to split the 1 port to the Vonage. Some of the Vonage adapters have had build in routers and so work sufficently in some circumstances. It depends some on other network traffic and what you are comfortable doing. What Vonage adapter do you have might be the best question to ask right now?

Thanks for the quick response... appreciated! My current Vonage router is a Linksys model RT31P2.

If you have an ISP that provides 2 IP addresses, I would just put a switch in fron of them after the router.

Also, if you daisy chain routers, make sure that they are not using the same LAN sub-net range. They usually are by default, so you need to change one of them. If you don't, you will have problems.

Maybe not. I would hope the routers are smart enough to use a different subnet on the LAN side of the router and the WAN side. So if you are daisy chaining, you would be going out of the LAN side of the first device, and into the WAN side of the second. The router in the second device should offer private IP addresses in a different subnet through it's DHCP server automatically. I'd be surprised if it requires manual configuration. Of course the second device would be serving IP addresses to your computer.

Another option that eliminates the whole daisy chain sub-net dilemma is to use a v-phone for the third line.
